Il romanzo francese del 900.
Contenuti:
- La crisi del narratore onnisciente ottocentesco
- Alla ricerca di nuove possibilità narrative: introduzione ai testi in programma, lettura e commento di brani tratti dalle opere narrative previste
Il corso sarà quindi diviso in due parti: la prima di circa 14 ore, la seconda di circa 34 ore. Non sono previste attività didattiche complementari.

Il discorso generale sul romanzo del 900 e la puntuale analisi dei brani narrativi intendono:
a) condurre lo studente a comprendere la complessità delle problematiche alla base della crisi e del rinnovamento del romanzo francese noventesco, sì da poter svolgere un discorso chiaro e sintetico sull'argomento, individuandone gli elementi essenziali, anche con un confronto con le altre letterature studiate
b) permettere allo studente di acquisire le tecniche e le strategie interpretative dell'analisi testuale dei testi narrativi, in particolare delle opere del 900 francese.

Il corso si propone di introdurre lo studente alle problematiche della letteratura aurea spagnola, approfondendo la figura di don Giovanni in Tirso de Molina per arrivare a coglierne la rielaborazione e la riscrittura romantica in José Zorrilla

The program is a basic course and intends to present the lines of development of the history of medieval art from the 4th to the 14th century, focusing on a series of particularly significant works for each period (early Christian, early medieval, Romanesque, Gothic) appropriately selected based on the interest of conservative events.
Given the small number of teaching hours, it is expected that the study of the teaching book will be carried out independently by the student on the basis of the indications that will be provided in class.
They will be focused on transversal themes and on problematic issues: temporal thresholds and periodization; relationship with the antiquity and reuse of materials, the West and Byzantium; techniques of particular disusino in the Middle Ages (mural painting and wall mosaic); the 'discovery' of medieval art through restorations between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The program will be supplemented by visits to Viterbo and Rome which are a fundamental part of the course

The course presents a series of preparatory lessons aimed at defining the guidelines of the history of contemporary art. In particular, preparatory lessons are planned to define the guidelines of the history of contemporary art from impressionism to the most recent experiences. During the lessons we provide, through the analysis of some basic figures and joints, the contexts, the foundational texts, the works, the main interpretations that allow the student an adequate approach to the problems of contemporary art, to its fundamental concepts , to the protagonists, to the new languages, to the new hermeneutical models involved, to the new technologies.
The course will be spend particular attention to praxis of art towards environmental trespassing, the aspiration to transform itself into a practice that is hybrid with the space of everyday life, and to the relationship between art and architecture, between art and environment and landscape (city and nature) during the 20th and 21th centuries.

The course focuses on the birth and development of the notion of tolerance. A first phase will be devoted to laying the foundations of knowledge of political philosophy in the modern age. The first part of the module (roughly 30 hours) aims to highlight the fundamental concepts of both theory and practice of translation in order to help students master the necessary translation tools according to the most common types of text. The second part (roughly 30 hours) sets out to enhance students' practical and reflective learning. Emphasis will be placed on the analysis of diverse text typologies. The course will stress the importance of using the Italian language correctly in light of the above choices. Particular attention will also be paid to the contrastive aspects of English-Italian(-English) translation and to the difficulties usually faced by Italian learners in the study of English (e.g. idioms, false friends, present perfect tense etc.). The course is based on a hands-on approach aiming at the B1/B1+ level of the CEFR.

The course aims to develop the knowledge of the foreign language by studying the translation problems of a written and oral text, from the Spanish to the Italian language, paying particular attention to the non-secondary aspect of the frequent risky affinity between these two expressive codes.
The knowledge of the "hispanoblante" world as a viaticum of intercultural competence will also be taken into consideration, focusing on the expressive modalities of the Spanish language as used in / by the media, in/by tourism, in/by the law, in/by journalism, in/by advertising, in/by politics.
The linguistic key functions ​​(argumentation, persuasion, etc.) will be fathomed to induce students to criticize linguistic mechanisms in the construction of the discourse according to its aims and pragmatic characteristics.

This course wants to give a global view of the Portugal history, geography and culture including the Lusophony countries and all the geographical areas that have a linguistic background that came from the Portuguese language. Il corso si propone uno studio sulla figura della donna nella letteratura e nella cultura portoghese nei secoli XVII E XVIII. Si leggeranno alcune opere prodotte dalle scrittrici, i loro contesti di scrittura, le condizioni di creatività ed estetiche.

The first part of the module (roughly 30 hours) aims to highlight the fundamental concepts of both theory and practice of translation in order to help students master the necessary translation tools according to the most common types of text. The second part (roughly 30 hours) sets out to enhance students' practical and reflective learning. Emphasis will be placed on the analysis of diverse text typologies. The course will stress the importance of using the Italian language correctly in light of the above choices. Particular attention will also be paid to the contrastive aspects of English-Italian(-English) translation and to the difficulties usually faced by Italian learners in the study of English (e.g. idioms, false friends, present perfect tense etc.). The course is based on a hands-on approach aiming at the B1/B1+ level of the CEFR.

The course aims to develop the knowledge of the foreign language by studying the translation problems of a written and oral text, from the Spanish to the Italian language, paying particular attention to the non-secondary aspect of the frequent risky affinity between these two expressive codes.
The knowledge of the "hispanoblante" world as a viaticum of intercultural competence will also be taken into consideration, focusing on the expressive modalities of the Spanish language as used in / by the media, in/by tourism, in/by the law, in/by journalism, in/by advertising, in/by politics.
The linguistic key functions ​​(argumentation, persuasion, etc.) will be fathomed to induce students to criticize linguistic mechanisms in the construction of the discourse according to its aims and pragmatic characteristics.

The course focuses on examining language planning and policy in various communities and jurisdictions both in Europe and in Italy. At this regard, the application of the notions of language planning and policy within real-world situations are discussed. The historical roots of the specific language policy choices in European and Italian contexts are examined.

The course is divided into two modules.
The first module introduces students to the fundamentals of sociolinguistics at a theoretical and general level. Students will become familiar with the sociolinguistic situation of Italy.

The second module examines concrete cases of implementation of language policies in Italy, in Europe, and in extra-European contexts.

By the end of the course, students will be able to understand and discuss the main issues that go into the maneuvers of language policy as well as the complexity of the factors that refer to language planning decisions at the local, national, and international levels.

The message of this book still holds today:
The earth’s interlocking resources – the global system of nature in which we all live – probably cannot support present rates of economic and population growth much beyond the year 2100, if that long, even with advanced technology. In the summer of 1970, an international team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology began a study of the implications of continued worldwide growth. They examined the five basic factors that determine and, in their interactions, ultimately limit growth on this planet-population increase, agricultural production, nonrenewable resource depletion, industrial output, and pollution generation. The MIT team fed data on these five factors into a global computer model and then tested the behaviour of the model under several sets of assumptions to determine alternative patterns for mankind’s future. The Limits to Growth is the nontechnical report of their findings. The book contains a message of hope, as well: Man can create a society in which he can live indefinitely on earth if he imposes limits on himself and his production of material goods to achieve a state of global equilibrium with population and production in carefully selected balance.

Obiettivi e articolazione del corso
Il corso intende fornire agli studenti una compiuta panoramica sulla storia russa, con particolare riferimento
ad Ottocento e Novecento. Particolarmente evidenziata sarà la dialettica arcaismo/modernità come chiave di
lettura dello sviluppo della nazione russa, in comparazione con le entità statuali europee occidentali.
Il corso sarà suddiviso in 3 parti:
Prima parte, introduttiva: formazione dello Stato russo, dalla Rus’ di Kiev alla Moscovia.
Seconda parte: da Pietro il Grande alla fine dell’Ottocento
Terza parte: dalle precondizioni della rivoluzione novecentesca; le rivoluzioni del 1905 e 1917; il sistema di
potere sovietico; il ruolo dell’URSS nella seconda guerra mondiale; dalla destalinizzazione al crollo dell’URSS.
Il corso si concentrerà prevalentemente sulle interpretazioni storiografiche, sulla società e l’economia
dell’Unione Sovietica.

Argomenti che verranno trattati nel corso
Il corso si articola attorno ad una serie di nodi problematici, di cui si evidenzierà il lascito nella storia
successiva. Si affronteranno i seguenti argomenti: il costituirsi della statualità russa: dalla Rus’ di Kiev
all’affermarsi della Moscovia; la repubblica di Novgorod; il regno di Ivan il Terribile; Pietro il grande: la Russia
e la sfida della modernità: l’occidentalizzazione settecentesca; la rivoluzione francese e il rifiuto dell’Occidente;
le riforme di Alessandro II e la modernizzazione dell’Impero alla fine dell’Ottocento; la rivoluzione del 1905,
che permetterà di misurare il peso dell’arretratezza e i problemi con cui era alle prese la Russia davanti alla
sfida della modernità; le rivoluzioni del 1917 e le diverse interpretazioni alle quali hanno dato luogo; la guerra
civile e la formazione del sistema sovietico; la NEP e la genesi della dittatura staliniana; lo stalinismo; la guerra;
la destalinizzazione; il crollo dell’Urss; la nascita della Russia post-comunista. Verranno infine esplorate le
possibilità e i limiti di una comparazione fra l’esperienza sovietica e le altre esperienze totalitarie del XX
secolo, il fascismo e il nazismo in particolare.

Le lezioni saranno accompagnate da approfondimenti seminariali sulle avanguardie culturali, artistiche ed
architettoniche post rivoluzionarie.

Il corso sarà quindi diviso in due parti: la prima di circa 14 ore, la seconda di circa 34 ore. Non sono previste attività didattiche complementari.

Il discorso generale sul romanzo del 900 e la puntuale analisi dei brani narrativi intendono:
a) condurre lo studente a comprendere la complessità delle problematiche alla base della crisi e del rinnovamento del romanzo francese noventesco, sì da poter svolgere un discorso chiaro e sintetico sull'argomento, individuandone gli elementi essenziali, anche con un confronto con le altre letterature studiate
b) permettere allo studente di acquisire le tecniche e le strategie interpretative dell'analisi testuale dei testi narrativi, in particolare delle opere del 900 francese.

During the course some basic concepts of translation theory will be illustrated to allow students to recognize and apply translation strategies for each specific case.
The first part of the course will focus on the development of exercises aiming to enhance the English vocabulary and strengthening the morpho-syntactic competences from a comparative perspective (English / Italian). A variety of texts will also be presented – literary, scientific, legal, newspaper articles, etc. – each of which involves different levels of difficulties and different translation problems. Particular attention will be paid to the Italian translations of such classics as Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, The Duel by Joseph Conrad and The Diary of Anne Rodway by Wilkie Collins. Exercises will be carried out on these texts, both individually and in group. Teaching materials will be provided during the lessons.
The course aims to develop the different skills involved in translation practice, by stimulating awareness as regards individual traductological] choices and possible effects of the syntactic and semantic-pragmatic transformations operated in the translation process. The primary purpose will be to enable students to assess the transformative choices of the source text in order to produce a text corresponding to the cultural peculiarities of the target language, the conventions and communicative codes used in the sociocultural context of arrival. The function that the text is called to perform will be analyzed considering its pragmatic use.

A part of the course is dedicated to the fundamentals of the discipline, therefore to the birth and differentiation of the Romance languages and to the origins of the literature written in those languages. During the lectures a general overview of the historical-cultural and linguistic processes that led to the birth and development of Romance languages and literatures is provided and some ancient testimonies are analyzed from a historical and linguistic point of view. Particular attention is paid to the genetic relationships between the various languages and to the factors that determined their progressive differentiation. A minor part of the course is devoted to the reception and fortune of the poetry in langue d'oc and to its diffusion in medieval Europe also through the analysis of some novels in verse. From a literary historical point of view, some poetic texts of the most important poets and some novels in Provençal and Old French are analyzed from a thematic, linguistic and formal point of view. EXPECTED RESULTS: At the end of the course students will learn about the history of Romance language formation and the birth of literature written in those languages, the main linguistic changes that characterize the transition from spoken Latin to Romance languages and some of the distinctive features that identify them, the elements that characterize romance poetry with respect to the tradition of classical and medieval latin poetry; moreover they will know how to orient themselves in the thematic, linguistic and formal analysis of a medieval text.

Course presentation
This module provides both an historical and cultural framework of the Germanic tribes in the Middle Ages and a synchronic description of the Common Germanic and its later linguistic developments, with particular regard to the early varieties of West Germanic (Old English and Old High German dialects). It also offers an introduction to the philological and linguistic analysis of the earliest Germanic texts and to useful operational tools in this field of study.

Germanic Philology: subject, method and field of application; the comparative method in historical linguistics; Germanic and concept of proto-language reconstruction; trees vs waves: two models of language diversification; phonological and morphological development from Indo-European to Proto-Germanic and to medieval Germanic languages; linguistic interference: Germanic-Romans contacts in Antiquity and in the Early Middle Ages; Germanic tribes and writing.

Practical comparative-contrastive analysis of some Lord’s Prayer versions in Gothic, Old English and Old High German.

Programme
The course consists in the description of the characteristics of the main corpora of Italian on the web, associated with the definition of what a corpus is, how it is built and how it can be useful for linguistic research and teaching. During the course some textual corpora of Italian will be illustrated and analysed in their concrete functions, with particular attention to their uses for the language to Italians and foreigners. At least one third of the lessons will take place in computer labs, where students will be able to use digital resources directly through the workstations and produce their own proposals for application models.

The first will deal with the main themes of digital humanities, such as the concept of information, the history of computers, the internet, artificial intelligence. Il romanzo francese del 900.
Contenuti:
- La crisi del narratore onnisciente ottocentesco
- Alla ricerca di nuove possibilità narrative: introduzione ai testi in programma, lettura e commento di brani tratti dalle opere narrative previste
Il corso sarà quindi diviso in due parti: la prima di circa 14 ore, la seconda di circa 34 ore. Non sono previste attività didattiche complementari.

Il discorso generale sul romanzo del 900 e la puntuale analisi dei brani narrativi intendono:
a) condurre lo studente a comprendere la complessità delle problematiche alla base della crisi e del rinnovamento del romanzo francese noventesco, sì da poter svolgere un discorso chiaro e sintetico sull'argomento, individuandone gli elementi essenziali, anche con un confronto con le altre letterature studiate
b) permettere allo studente di acquisire le tecniche e le strategie interpretative dell'analisi testuale dei testi narrativi, in particolare delle opere del 900 francese.

The program is a basic course and intends to present the lines of development of the history of medieval art from the 4th to the 14th century, focusing on a series of particularly significant works for each period (early Christian, early medieval, Romanesque, Gothic) appropriately selected based on the interest of conservative events.
Given the small number of teaching hours, it is expected that the study of the teaching book will be carried out independently by the student on the basis of the indications that will be provided in class.
They will be focused on transversal themes and on problematic issues: temporal thresholds and periodization; relationship with the antiquity and reuse of materials, the West and Byzantium; techniques of particular disusino in the Middle Ages (mural painting and wall mosaic); the 'discovery' of medieval art through restorations between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The course presents a series of preparatory lessons aimed at defining the guidelines of the history of contemporary art. In particular, preparatory lessons are planned to define the guidelines of the history of contemporary art from impressionism to the most recent experiences. During the lessons we provide, through the analysis of some basic figures and joints, the contexts, the foundational texts, the works, the main interpretations that allow the student an adequate approach to the problems of contemporary art, to its fundamental concepts , to the protagonists, to the new languages, to the new hermeneutical models involved, to the new technologies.
The course will be spend particular attention to praxis of art towards environmental trespassing, the aspiration to transform itself into a practice that is hybrid with the space of everyday life, and to the relationship between art and architecture, between art and environment and landscape (city and nature) during the 20th and 21th centuries.

The course focuses on the birth and development of the notion of tolerance. A first phase will be devoted to laying the foundations of knowledge of political philosophy in the modern age. The first part of the module (roughly 30 hours) aims to highlight the fundamental concepts of both theory and practice of translation in order to help students master the necessary translation tools according to the most common types of text. The second part (roughly 30 hours) sets out to enhance students' practical and reflective learning. Emphasis will be placed on the analysis of diverse text typologies. The course will stress the importance of using the Italian language correctly in light of the above choices. Particular attention will also be paid to the contrastive aspects of English-Italian(-English) translation and to the difficulties usually faced by Italian learners in the study of English (e.g. idioms, false friends, present perfect tense etc.). The course is based on a hands-on approach aiming at the B1/B1+ level of the CEFR.

The course aims to develop the knowledge of the foreign language by studying the translation problems of a written and oral text, from the Spanish to the Italian language, paying particular attention to the non-secondary aspect of the frequent risky affinity between these two expressive codes.
The knowledge of the "hispanoblante" world as a viaticum of intercultural competence will also be taken into consideration, focusing on the expressive modalities of the Spanish language as used in / by the media, in/by tourism, in/by the law, in/by journalism, in/by advertising, in/by politics.
The linguistic key functions ​​(argumentation, persuasion, etc.) will be fathomed to induce students to criticize linguistic mechanisms in the construction of the discourse according to its aims and pragmatic characteristics.

The course aims to develop the knowledge of the foreign language by studying the translation problems of a written and oral text, from the Spanish to the Italian language, paying particular attention to the non-secondary aspect of the frequent risky affinity between these two expressive codes.
The knowledge of the "hispanoblante" world as a viaticum of intercultural competence will also be taken into consideration, focusing on the expressive modalities of the Spanish language as used in / by the media, in/by tourism, in/by the law, in/by journalism, in/by advertising, in/by politics.
The linguistic key functions ​​(argumentation, persuasion, etc.) will be fathomed to induce students to criticize linguistic mechanisms in the construction of the discourse according to its aims and pragmatic characteristics.

The course focuses on examining language planning and policy in various communities and jurisdictions both in Europe and in Italy. At this regard, the application of the notions of language planning and policy within real-world situations are discussed. The historical roots of the specific language policy choices in European and Italian contexts are examined.

The course is divided into two modules.
The first module introduces students to the fundamentals of sociolinguistics at a theoretical and general level. Students will become familiar with the sociolinguistic situation of Italy.

The second module examines concrete cases of implementation of language policies in Italy, in Europe, and in extra-European contexts.

By the end of the course, students will be able to understand and discuss the main issues that go into the maneuvers of language policy as well as the complexity of the factors that refer to language planning decisions at the local, national, and international levels.

The message of this book still holds today:
The earth’s interlocking resources – the global system of nature in which we all live – probably cannot support present rates of economic and population growth much beyond the year 2100, if that long, even with advanced technology. In the summer of 1970, an international team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology began a study of the implications of continued worldwide growth. They examined the five basic factors that determine and, in their interactions, ultimately limit growth on this planet-population increase, agricultural production, nonrenewable resource depletion, industrial output, and pollution generation. The MIT team fed data on these five factors into a global computer model and then tested the behaviour of the model under several sets of assumptions to determine alternative patterns for mankind’s future. The Limits to Growth is the nontechnical report of their findings. The book contains a message of hope, as well: Man can create a society in which he can live indefinitely on earth if he imposes limits on himself and his production of material goods to achieve a state of global equilibrium with population and production in carefully selected balance.

Obiettivi e articolazione del corso
Il corso intende fornire agli studenti una compiuta panoramica sulla storia russa, con particolare riferimento
ad Ottocento e Novecento. Particolarmente evidenziata sarà la dialettica arcaismo/modernità come chiave di
lettura dello sviluppo della nazione russa, in comparazione con le entità statuali europee occidentali.
Il corso sarà suddiviso in 3 parti:
Prima parte, introduttiva: formazione dello Stato russo, dalla Rus’ di Kiev alla Moscovia.
Seconda parte: da Pietro il Grande alla fine dell’Ottocento
Terza parte: dalle precondizioni della rivoluzione novecentesca; le rivoluzioni del 1905 e 1917; il sistema di
potere sovietico; il ruolo dell’URSS nella seconda guerra mondiale; dalla destalinizzazione al crollo dell’URSS.
Il corso si concentrerà prevalentemente sulle interpretazioni storiografiche, sulla società e l’economia
dell’Unione Sovietica.

Argomenti che verranno trattati nel corso
Il corso si articola attorno ad una serie di nodi problematici, di cui si evidenzierà il lascito nella storia
successiva. Si affronteranno i seguenti argomenti: il costituirsi della statualità russa: dalla Rus’ di Kiev
all’affermarsi della Moscovia; la repubblica di Novgorod; il regno di Ivan il Terribile; Pietro il grande: la Russia
e la sfida della modernità: l’occidentalizzazione settecentesca; la rivoluzione francese e il rifiuto dell’Occidente;
le riforme di Alessandro II e la modernizzazione dell’Impero alla fine dell’Ottocento; la rivoluzione del 1905,
che permetterà di misurare il peso dell’arretratezza e i problemi con cui era alle prese la Russia davanti alla
sfida della modernità; le rivoluzioni del 1917 e le diverse interpretazioni alle quali hanno dato luogo; la guerra
civile e la formazione del sistema sovietico; la NEP e la genesi della dittatura staliniana; lo stalinismo; la guerra;
la destalinizzazione; il crollo dell’Urss; la nascita della Russia post-comunista. Verranno infine esplorate le
possibilità e i limiti di una comparazione fra l’esperienza sovietica e le altre esperienze totalitarie del XX
secolo, il fascismo e il nazismo in particolare.

Le lezioni saranno accompagnate da approfondimenti seminariali sulle avanguardie culturali, artistiche ed
architettoniche post rivoluzionarie.

Il corso sarà quindi diviso in due parti: la prima di circa 14 ore, la seconda di circa 34 ore. Non sono previste attività didattiche complementari.

Il discorso generale sul romanzo del 900 e la puntuale analisi dei brani narrativi intendono:
a) condurre lo studente a comprendere la complessità delle problematiche alla base della crisi e del rinnovamento del romanzo francese noventesco, sì da poter svolgere un discorso chiaro e sintetico sull'argomento, individuandone gli elementi essenziali, anche con un confronto con le altre letterature studiate
b) permettere allo studente di acquisire le tecniche e le strategie interpretative dell'analisi testuale dei testi narrativi, in particolare delle opere del 900 francese.

During the course some basic concepts of translation theory will be illustrated to allow students to recognize and apply translation strategies for each specific case.
The first part of the course will focus on the development of exercises aiming to enhance the English vocabulary and strengthening the morpho-syntactic competences from a comparative perspective (English / Italian). A variety of texts will also be presented – literary, scientific, legal, newspaper articles, etc. – each of which involves different levels of difficulties and different translation problems. Particular attention will be paid to the Italian translations of such classics as Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, The Duel by Joseph Conrad and The Diary of Anne Rodway by Wilkie Collins. Exercises will be carried out on these texts, both individually and in group. Teaching materials will be provided during the lessons.
The course aims to develop the different skills involved in translation practice, by stimulating awareness as regards individual traductological] choices and possible effects of the syntactic and semantic-pragmatic transformations operated in the translation process. The primary purpose will be to enable students to assess the transformative choices of the source text in order to produce a text corresponding to the cultural peculiarities of the target language, the conventions and communicative codes used in the sociocultural context of arrival. The function that the text is called to perform will be analyzed considering its pragmatic use.

During the course some basic concepts of translation theory will be illustrated to allow students to recognize and apply translation strategies for each specific case.
The first part of the course will focus on the development of exercises aiming to enhance the English vocabulary and strengthening the morpho-syntactic competences from a comparative perspective (English / Italian). A variety of texts will also be presented – literary, scientific, legal, newspaper articles, etc. – each of which involves different levels of difficulties and different translation problems. Particular attention will be paid to the Italian translations of such classics as Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, The Duel by Joseph Conrad and The Diary of Anne Rodway by Wilkie Collins. Exercises will be carried out on these texts, both individually and in group. Teaching materials will be provided during the lessons.
The course aims to develop the different skills involved in translation practice, by stimulating awareness as regards individual traductological] choices and possible effects of the syntactic and semantic-pragmatic transformations operated in the translation process. The primary purpose will be to enable students to assess the transformative choices of the source text in order to produce a text corresponding to the cultural peculiarities of the target language, the conventions and communicative codes used in the sociocultural context of arrival. The function that the text is called to perform will be analyzed considering its pragmatic use.

A part of the course is dedicated to the fundamentals of the discipline, therefore to the birth and differentiation of the Romance languages and to the origins of the literature written in those languages. During the lectures a general overview of the historical-cultural and linguistic processes that led to the birth and development of Romance languages and literatures is provided and some ancient testimonies are analyzed from a historical and linguistic point of view. Particular attention is paid to the genetic relationships between the various languages and to the factors that determined their progressive differentiation. A minor part of the course is devoted to the reception and fortune of the poetry in langue d'oc and to its diffusion in medieval Europe also through the analysis of some novels in verse. From a literary historical point of view, some poetic texts of the most important poets and some novels in Provençal and Old French are analyzed from a thematic, linguistic and formal point of view. EXPECTED RESULTS: At the end of the course students will learn about the history of Romance language formation and the birth of literature written in those languages, the main linguistic changes that characterize the transition from spoken Latin to Romance languages and some of the distinctive features that identify them, the elements that characterize romance poetry with respect to the tradition of classical and medieval latin poetry; moreover they will know how to orient themselves in the thematic, linguistic and formal analysis of a medieval text.

Course presentation
This module provides both an historical and cultural framework of the Germanic tribes in the Middle Ages and a synchronic description of the Common Germanic and its later linguistic developments, with particular regard to the early varieties of West Germanic (Old English and Old High German dialects). It also offers an introduction to the philological and linguistic analysis of the earliest Germanic texts and to useful operational tools in this field of study.

Programme
The course consists in the description of the characteristics of the main corpora of Italian on the web, associated with the definition of what a corpus is, how it is built and how it can be useful for linguistic research and teaching. During the course some textual corpora of Italian will be illustrated and analysed in their concrete functions, with particular attention to their uses for the language to Italians and foreigners. At least one third of the lessons will take place in computer labs, where students will be able to use digital resources directly through the workstations and produce their own proposals for application models.

The first part of the module (roughly 30 hours) aims to highlight the fundamental concepts of both theory and practice of translation in order to help students master the necessary translation tools according to the most common types of text. The second part (roughly 30 hours) sets out to enhance students' practical and reflective learning. Emphasis will be placed on the analysis of diverse text typologies. The course will stress the importance of using the Italian language correctly in light of the above choices. Particular attention will also be paid to the contrastive aspects of English-Italian(-English) translation and to the difficulties usually faced by Italian learners in the study of English (e.g. idioms, false friends, present perfect tense etc.). The course is based on a hands-on approach aiming at the B1/B1+ level of the CEFR.
