At the end of the course, all students will have to prove that they: - know the main theoretical notions on the phenomenon of figement in French; - are able to analyse idiomatic expressions in French and Italian from a constrastive point of view; - know how to use language corpora for the research and study of idiomatic expressions; - know the correspondence between French and Italian idioms and know how to translate them.

This course aimes at the knowledge of basic theories of lexical semantics for the analysis and study of meaning. It is also intended to provide a presentation of practical tools for semantic analysis (related to corpus linguistics) such as language corpora and concordance programs. A part of the course will be dedicated to the practice of translation.

LINGUA E TRADUZIONE INGLESE I
(objectives)
The course aims to develop students’competence at a Master’s level in the field of linguistic-discursive analysis of TV series and in the field of intersemiotic translation ( especially from literary text to TV/Cinema text) Furthermore, with reference to the Dublin descriptors, the aim is to develop:
1) Knowledge and Understanding of analytical and methodological research tools. In particular, linguistic analysis will be focused - with a multisciplinary approach - on corpus-assisted research of literary and TV/Cinema text, on evaluative language, on the analysis of translation processes (from literary text to TV/Cinema/ Media text) as discursive practices mirroring our contemporary political-cultural context. 2) Applying Knowledge and Understanding to the field of linguistics of TV series of English-speaking areas, to the field of translation studies (inter-semiotic translation in particular) and to individual and/or group presentation within the above mentioned research domains. 3) Making Judgements: developing skills to select and analyse relevant texts in English to verify their peculiarities and features in the field of TV Series, related posts and comments on Social Media, streaming entertainment services, as well as in the field of trans-codification of literary texts into TV/Cinema works; developing skills to evaluate criticism on these issues, and to evaluate their own analysis and research. 4) Communication Skills aimed to the full understanding of the texts analysed in the course, of those listed in the bibliography of the course, of notions and methodology needed for communicative interaction during individual/group presentations. 5) Learning Skills: acquisition of a specific competence in the field of contemporary TV Series in English and of TV/Film Adaptation as intersemiotic translation practice. Developing skills of Public Speaking to present group and/or individual works on the above mentioned issues.

TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICAN DRAMA: PLAYS IN CONTEXT
This course aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of twentieth-century American drama, some of its most influential playwrights, its distinctive aesthetic and stylistic eclecticism, and its recurrent themes, metaphors, and motifs. Students will read six pivotal plays written by American and African American playwrights between 1941 and 1993, and they will explore the ways in which theatre, drama, and performance have contributed to the construction and deconstruction of an American identity. Although close reading and analysis of dramatic texts will be the main focus of the course, due attention will be paid to the theatrical, cultural, and historical contexts in which each play was conceived and produced, so that students will be able to understand American theatre history as a significant part of modern American cultural history. Besides encountering and learning to recognize a range of different dramatic styles, students will also examine the conflicting representations of American identity within each play, and will investigate the ways in which the six plays may connect with each other and with the broader American culture and experience.

The course aims to provide students with an introduction to historical sociolinguistics. The language studied will be the Tamil language, typologically distant from the European languages and spoken in the Southern area of the Indian subcontinent.
Different typology of texts written in Tamil will be analysed and discussed taking into account their genre, function, writing support, and recipients of the text. The aim is to observe the linguistic variation and the linguistic change correlating it to extra-linguistic factors. The lexical and morphological levels will be observed.
Students are required to have a good acquaintance of the principles of Sociolinguistics and Historical Linguistics.
The course will offer a historical-cultural overview of Indian reality: the history of civilization, development of Tamil writing systems and literature, Tamil diglossia in historical perspective, contacts with other languages, and civilizations. In order to do that, Students will be also introduced to basic notions of Modern and Old grammar of Tamil. The teacher will provide transliterated texts and a glossary for personal practice and class readings. Students will be asked to analyse and discuss texts transmitted throughout a non-European writing system during classes and on their own as preparation to the exam.
Attendance is highly recommended.

Course: Applied Linguistics
Descriptions: The purpose of this course is to provide students with advanced knowledge in the field of language teaching. The first module of the course provides an overview of the applications of research-based linguistic theory and methodology to language teaching, from the the perspective of the so called educational linguistics. The second module focuses on vocabulary learning and teaching; it will be shown how contemporary approaches to lexical semantics can help to construct more effective methods of teaching lexical phenomena like polysemy, homonymy, metaphors, idioms.

Nella prima parte del corso, di carattere più generale, si esamineranno le ricadute che diversi filoni di ricerca nell’ambito delle scienze del linguaggio possono avere nella pratica dell’educazione linguistica. Nella seconda parte del corso, più specifica, si esamineranno le ricadute glottodidattiche dei principali costrutti e modelli elaborati dalla semantica lessicale per l’analisi dei fenomeni chiave del lessico (polisemia, ambiguità, metafore, espressioni idiomatiche). Le ultime 12 ore del corso (riservate agli studenti del curriculum "Letterature e civiltà" che devono ottenere 10 CFU in questo esame) saranno dedicate a esaminare più in dettaglio alcuni aspetti della didattica del lessico; la partecipazione a queste lezioni è comunque aperta a tutti gli studenti.

Relativamente alla parte linguistica, verranno approfonditi in particolare il lessico e i registri (stili funzionali) del russo, oltre a una riflessione sulla morfosintassi del russo che va ad integrarsi alle precedenti conoscenze linguistiche. Relativamente alla parte storico-letteraria, verrà delineata una panoramica sull'attività pubblicistico-letteraria e teatrale di A.P. Čechov, e proposta un'approfondita analisi delle scelte linguistiche dell'autore e la traduzione di alcuni racconti selezionati, tra i più celebri.

The aim of this course is to show, both from a theoretical and pragmatic point of view, the "re-mediation" made by the computational tool of idea of the book. Examples of digital editions will be analyzed, starting from the electronic book to electronic scholarly editions, with a strong emphasis both on the document-centric aspect, represented by the text encoding and in particular by the language of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), and on the datacentric one, represented by relational databases and the Semantic Web. Then tools for the analysis of the literary text and the representation of primary sources will be presented and analyzed.
