By using a hands-on approach, the main objective of this course is to raise students' awareness regarding the translation of different types of texts. The importance of using the Italian language correctly in translation will also be stressed. Expected outcome: at least B1 CEFR level.

The course aims to highlight the fundamental concepts of both theory and practice of translation in order to help students master the necessary translation tools according to the most common types of text. Emphasis will be placed on the translation of the main syntactic and grammatical structures of the English language and on the analysis of its main semantic, pragmatic and socio-cultural features which may affect the various translatological choices. The course will stress the importance of using the Italian language correctly in light of the above choices. Particular attention will also be paid to the contrastive aspects of English-Italian(-English) translation and to the difficulties usually faced by Italian learners in the study of English (e.g. phrasal verbs, idioms, false friends, present perfect tense etc.). The course will embrace a hands-on approach aiming at the B1 level of the CEFR.

LINGUA E TRADUZIONE SPAGNOLA I
(objectives)
The aim of the course is to provide the theoretical and application tools necessary for students to acquire a linguistic competence at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, while developing basic skills (comprehension and production of written and oral texts) in an integrated way. Through the use of authentic texts in Spanish, therefore, we will try to get them used to performing fundamental linguistic and communicative operations: explaining, summarizing, paraphrasing, etc. Students will start the study of translation and translation studies, dealing with the following topics: difference between translation and translation studies; intersemiotic, interlinguistic and intralinguistic translation; purpose of translation; classes, types and methods of translation; text genres and types of translation; the translation of specialty texts; translation competence, error and evaluation of the translation. Through the study of pragmatics and discourse analysis, an attempt will be made to develop a communicative approach in the use of the foreign language, thus learning to "package" texts / speeches appropriate to the context, the recipients and the purpose of the event. Students will be trained to interpret and use specialty texts, from the legal to the economic and technical-scientific fields, analyzing their lexical and morphosyntactic characteristics.

The course aims to develop the knowledge of the foreign language by studying the translation problems of a written and oral text, from the Spanish to the Italian language, paying particular attention to the non-secondary aspect of the frequent risky affinity between these two expressive codes. The knowledge of the "hispanoblante" world as a viaticum of intercultural competence will also be taken into consideration, focusing on the expressive modalities of the Spanish language as used in / by the media, in/by tourism, in/by the law, in/by journalism, in/by advertising, in/by politics. The key functions of these languages (persuasion, manipulation, etc.) will be fathomed first from a theoretical point of view, then from a practical one, to induce students to criticize linguistic mechanisms (circumlocution, repetition, metaphor, etc.), which end up playing a strategic role in the construction of the discourse according to its aims and pragmatic characteristics.

As introductory teaching, the course aims to convey the concept of Lusophony and of the linguistic diversity linked to the communicative use of Portuguese in the current ex-colonies of Portugal. Furthermore, the course intends to provide necessary tools to recognize and translate different types and textual genres (narrative, descriptive, expository, argumentative, regulative) belonging to different Lusophone communicative contexts and to propose an introduction to passive written and oral translation (from Portuguese to Italian ).

The Lusophony: diachronic historical view and linguistic approach.
Part A (40 hours): History of Portuguese language The first part of the course aims to illustrate the formation of the territorial space of Lusophony through historical insights needed to understand the mechanisms of the expansion of the Portuguese language in the XV, XVI and XVII centuries (the golden period of Portugal history) in Asia, Africa and Brazil, where the communicative use of the idiom spread in the colonies. In addition to a diachronic framework of the historical events that led to the spread of Portuguese as a lingua franca in the colonies of the ultramarine empire during the Aviz dynasty, we will analyze the morpho-syntactic and lexical differences between the different varieties of Portuguese spoken in Asia, Africa and Brazil and those of the standard Portuguese of Portugal through comparative linguistic analysis activities with the use of authentic materials.
Part B (20 hours): Textual linguistics The second parte of the course aims to provide theoretical and practical skills for the analysis of different genres in Portuguese language elaborated in various cultural contexts (from the newspaper to advertising, from the literary to the tourist texts) and to analyze the morphological notions to acquire deep knowledge on the functioning of the idiom. The analysis of different written and oral textual genres (narrative, descriptive, expositive, argumentative, regulatory) and practical activities of translation (oral and written) will allow to widen the specific vocabulary of different semantic spheres (in particular tourism, advertising and literary sectors) belonging to multiple socio-discursive contexts of Lusofonia.

La disciplina ha come obiettivo formativo generale quello di fornire agli studenti gli elementi essenziali per la comprensione di un percorso culturale peculiare del Portogallo, sia in campo storico che culturale. Su questa base si è scelto di privilegiare lo studio di un’epoca particolarmente significativa nello sviluppo storico-culturale della letteratura portoghese: la letteratura dell’epoca delle grandi scoperte geografiche e in particolar modo la visione dell’altro nel Tratado di Luís Fróis, nella Carta di Pêro Vaz de Caminha , nell’opera Tratados da terra e gente do Brasil di Fernão Cardim, nel Roteiro di Vasco da Gama, nelle Relationi della venuta degli Ambasciatori Giapponesi a Roma di Guido Gualtieri. Si analizzerà quel complesso di fattori, avvenimenti e personaggi che hanno portato i portoghesi, da piccolo popolo ai confini d’Europa a creare un amplissimo impero commerciale, comprendente basi in tre continenti, premessa alla formazione di nuove culture quali quella brasiliana e quelle africane lusofone.

a) Parte monografica: obiettivo formativo del corso è quello di riflettere su forme, simboli e modalità compositive dell'opera di José Saramago, il primo fra gli scrittori di lingua portoghese ad avere ricevuto il riconoscimento del Premio Nobel per la letteratura (1998). Sullo sfondo della storia portoghese del Novecento, saranno delineate le fasi salienti della traiettoria intellettuale e artistica e le tematiche di José Saramago, a partire dalla lettura dei romanzi "Memorial do Convento", "Historia do cerco de Lisboa", "Ensaio sobre a cegueira" e "Levantado do chao” . Saranno proiettate alcune interviste televisive e il film di Gonçalves Mendes “José e Pilar”. b) Parte Istituzionale: I anno: Storia della letteratura portoghese dalle origini a Camões escluso; II anno: Storia della letteratura portoghese dal Seicento al Settecento; III anno: Storia della letteratura portoghese dell'Ottocento e Novecento.

Course: Modern Languages Teaching
Description: The purpose of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge in the field of language teaching. The first module of the course addresses the core principles of language learning and teaching; it provides a historical overview of educational theory and explores current theories, methodologies and issues for the teaching of languages. The second module focuses on the teaching of Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP); it provides an introduction to various theoretical and practical aspects of teaching LSP and a detailed description of the specific (lexical, syntactic, textual, pragmatic) features of technical-scientific Italian compared to general Italian.

Understanding of the historical evolution of Italian, of its grammatical structures, of its varieties and of its relationship with other languages. Mastery of basic phenomenology and related terminology. Skills in linguistic and grammatical analysis of a text. At the end of the course, students will be able to know the key moments in the history of the Italian language, the linguistic characteristics of its structures and its main varieties; to identify the linguistic and formal peculiarities of the texts; to describe them according to the appropriate terminology and to interpret the connotative values; to make adequate use of linguistic and grammatical resources to produce texts independently.

AIMS 'Tell me how you talk and I'll tell you who you are': language as a social phenomenon and as a means of identity expression. Starting from the analysis of contemporary Italian language, the course aims to introduce students to the main sociolinguistics topics related to the use of language in relation to and within society. Variation and varieties of Italian will be commented, Thus, students will be involved in projects of sociolinguistic fieldworks collecting data among dialects varieties and regional varieties in Italy. They will analyse the collected data through software like FLEx, ELAN, SayMore, Audacity.
EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS At the end of the course the students must be able to: 1) discuss and comment briefly on the foundations of sociolinguistics 2) recognize and discuss phenomena of linguistic variation starting from the analysis of concrete examples of contemporary Italian proving to have learned the specialized technical language of the discipline 3) comment on micro-and macro sociolinguistic phenomena starting from contemporary Italian 4) undertake a project to collect linguistic data 5) Use linguistic data analysis software (FLEx, ELAN)

A.A. 19/20 The course is divided into two parts.
The first one (institutional), starting from the discussion on contemporary Italian, introduces students to the fundamental concepts and approaches of sociolinguistics and the sociology of language.
This part debates the ways and forms in which communication and language are interpreted as social dimensions, as well as the relationships existing between varieties in a repertoire. Considering the Italian linguistic repertoire, the actions that a state can implement to affect the relationships among varieties of language and the related consequences will be discussed..
The second part (monographic) is organized in theoretical and practical classes. The theoretical part focuses on the trends affecting contemporary Italian and its varieties; the relationships between Italian and other varieties such as dialects and regional varieties, as well as the situation of the Italian language abroad.
The practical classes will be held in the computer lab and students will be introduced to the methodologies of collecting and analysing linguistic data. Therefore, they will use the equipment for data collection, they will learn the methods for eliciting linguistic data and the software for analyzing the collected data (Audacity, ELAN and FLEx).
Attendance is highly recommended.

By using a hands-on approach, the main objective of this course is to raise students' awareness regarding the translation of different types of texts. The importance of using the Italian language correctly in translation will also be stressed. Expected outcome: at least B1 CEFR level.

The course aims to highlight the fundamental concepts of both theory and practice of translation in order to help students master the necessary translation tools according to the most common types of text. Emphasis will be placed on the translation of the main syntactic and grammatical structures of the English language and on the analysis of its main semantic, pragmatic and socio-cultural features which may affect the various translatological choices. The course will stress the importance of using the Italian language correctly in light of the above choices. Particular attention will also be paid to the contrastive aspects of English-Italian(-English) translation and to the difficulties usually faced by Italian learners in the study of English (e.g. phrasal verbs, idioms, false friends, present perfect tense etc.). The course will embrace a hands-on approach aiming at the B1 level of the CEFR.

(objectives)
The aim of the course is to provide the theoretical and application tools necessary for students to acquire a linguistic competence at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, while developing basic skills (comprehension and production of written and oral texts) in an integrated way. Through the use of authentic texts in Spanish, therefore, we will try to get them used to performing fundamental linguistic and communicative operations: explaining, summarizing, paraphrasing, etc. Students will start the study of translation and translation studies, dealing with the following topics: difference between translation and translation studies; intersemiotic, interlinguistic and intralinguistic translation; purpose of translation; classes, types and methods of translation; text genres and types of translation; the translation of specialty texts; translation competence, error and evaluation of the translation. Through the study of pragmatics and discourse analysis, an attempt will be made to develop a communicative approach in the use of the foreign language, thus learning to "package" texts / speeches appropriate to the context, the recipients and the purpose of the event. Students will be trained to interpret and use specialty texts, from the legal to the economic and technical-scientific fields, analyzing their lexical and morphosyntactic characteristics.

The course aims to develop the knowledge of the foreign language by studying the translation problems of a written and oral text, from the Spanish to the Italian language, paying particular attention to the non-secondary aspect of the frequent risky affinity between these two expressive codes. The knowledge of the "hispanoblante" world as a viaticum of intercultural competence will also be taken into consideration, focusing on the expressive modalities of the Spanish language as used in / by the media, in/by tourism, in/by the law, in/by journalism, in/by advertising, in/by politics. The key functions of these languages (persuasion, manipulation, etc.) will be fathomed first from a theoretical point of view, then from a practical one, to induce students to criticize linguistic mechanisms (circumlocution, repetition, metaphor, etc.), which end up playing a strategic role in the construction of the discourse according to its aims and pragmatic characteristics.

The Lusophony: diachronic historical view and linguistic approach.
Part A (40 hours): History of Portuguese language The first part of the course aims to illustrate the formation of the territorial space of Lusophony through historical insights needed to understand the mechanisms of the expansion of the Portuguese language in the XV, XVI and XVII centuries (the golden period of Portugal history) in Asia, Africa and Brazil, where the communicative use of the idiom spread in the colonies. In addition to a diachronic framework of the historical events that led to the spread of Portuguese as a lingua franca in the colonies of the ultramarine empire during the Aviz dynasty, we will analyze the morpho-syntactic and lexical differences between the different varieties of Portuguese spoken in Asia, Africa and Brazil and those of the standard Portuguese of Portugal through comparative linguistic analysis activities with the use of authentic materials.
Part B (20 hours): Textual linguistics The second parte of the course aims to provide theoretical and practical skills for the analysis of different genres in Portuguese language elaborated in various cultural contexts (from the newspaper to advertising, from the literary to the tourist texts) and to analyze the morphological notions to acquire deep knowledge on the functioning of the idiom. The analysis of different written and oral textual genres (narrative, descriptive, expositive, argumentative, regulatory) and practical activities of translation (oral and written) will allow to widen the specific vocabulary of different semantic spheres (in particular tourism, advertising and literary sectors) belonging to multiple socio-discursive contexts of Lusofonia.

The message of this book still holds today: The earth’s interlocking resources – the global system of nature in which we all live – probably cannot support present rates of economic and population growth much beyond the year 2100, if that long, even with advanced technology. In the summer of 1970, an international team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology began a study of the implications of continued worldwide growth. They examined the five basic factors that determine and, in their interactions, ultimately limit growth on this planet-population increase, agricultural production, nonrenewable resource depletion, industrial output, and pollution generation. The MIT team fed data on these five factors into a global computer model and then tested the behaviour of the model under several sets of assumptions to determine alternative patterns for mankind’s future. The Limits to Growth is the nontechnical report of their findings. The book contains a message of hope, as well: Man can create a society in which he can live indefinitely on earth if he imposes limits on himself and his production of material goods to achieve a state of global equilibrium with population and production in carefully selected balance.
