The program provides an in-depth study of the subject on two themes: the archeology of architecture and the archeology of rock settlements.
Starting from the study of architectural artefacts of the Middle Ages, the stratigraphic analysis of the elevation is privileged, an archaeological-based reading methodology that is also very useful for art historians who will have to deal with chronological attributions and with construction sites of restoration. On the other hand, in dealing with the methodological study of rock settlements, a series of lectures are devoted to the features of medieval topography, study of roads and other infrastructures of a territory in the Middle Ages.

Roman epic poetry from the beginnings to Vergil's Aeneid

The course is focused on Roman epic poetry, which occupy the first place, in Rome as in Greece, in the literary genres' hierarchy, and aims to propose a diachronic history from the beginnings to the Augustan age. A short introduction will be devoted to literary genres in Rome, to the relationship between Roman and Greek literature and to Greek epic's peculiar features. Important texts of Roman epic tradition will be examinated. The first section will concerne archaic epic, from Livius Andronicus' translation of Homer's Odissey, to Naevius' historic poem, to Ennius' Annales, which represent a milestone in Roman literary history. In the second section there will be an in-depth examination of late republican development of epic poetry, which sees a deep transformation of literary style and produces new forms (especially the neoteric epyllion), but knows also Lucretius' didaschalic epic, which forges a new philosophic as well as poetic language without forgetting archaic main models. Finally careful attention will be devoted to Vergil's Aeneid, masterpiece of the Augustan age and of the whole Western culture. All the texts will be analysed in their historical-cultural context, read and commented, paying peculiar attention to the genre tradition and to intertextual links which unite authors with their models.

This subject treats about the diagnostic analysis, especially the non-invasive ones, used in the study of cultural heritage objects in order to obtain information about the constituent materials and the state of preservation to be used for conservative purposes. The diagnostic methods are theoretically unlimited and can be derived also by other fields of science. Between the most used diagnostics techniques the following are treated: multispectral analysis with digital devices; elemental and molecular analysis by non-invasive portable instruments (X-ray fluorescence, Raman and infrared spectroscopy, reflectance spectrophotometry and other spectroscopic techniques). Innovative diagnostic techniques.
Laboratory experiences will be performed by using the instruments and the diagnostic techniques treated during the lessons.

The course is divided into two parts. The course is divided into two parts. In the first part of the course a general picture of the Copper Age societies in Europe is presented and the salient features of the first rank communities will be analyzed. Particular attention will be paid to the Italian situation. The second part of the course will have a seminar character. Through the direct examination of the archaeological documentation, specific and regional contexts of the facies of Rinaldone in central Italy will be analyzed.

The mendicant orders and the Gothic art.

The course intends to analyze the important role played by the mendicant orders - the Franciscan order and the Dominican order - in the diffusion of Gothic art. The main Franciscan and Dominican foundations in central Italy (in Assisi, Florence, Rome, Orvieto) will be examined.
The important role of the orders carried out in the eastern Mediterranean where the Franciscans are present in the Crusader territories in the Holy Land and in Constantinople will be examined.

The course will be divided into two parts: the first (38 hours) the teacher will draw the picture, the second (10 hours) will have a seminar character and the student will have to prepare a short report on texts assigned to a specific topic.

B) APPROFONDIMENTO MONOGRAFICO
Roma città aperta.
Ancora prima di essere fondata, Roma, o meglio il sito dove un giorno sorgerà Roma, appare come un crocevia di culture e di presenze mitiche davvero straordinarie. Uomini e dei provenienti da fuori vengono accolti, accogliendo a loro volta altri che, come loro, verranno a cercarvi rifugio (Saturno, Evandro, Eracle, Enea). La stessa fondazione dalla città, descritta nei termini di una vera e propria cosmogonia da Plutarco, è il risultato di apporti e contributi diversi: fondatori albani, sacerdoti etruschi, donne Sabine, ma soprattutto uomini dall’origine incerta. Se i miti delle origini sono rappresentazioni dell’autocoscienza collettiva, riflettono il carattere di un popolo, il suo modo di pensare e abitare il mondo, nel caso dei Romani si deve concludere che il tema della razza e della purezza etnica fosse, contrariamente a quello che si potrebbe pensare, quasi del tutto inesistente. Anzi, la città mostra sin dall’inizio un carattere composito, un’identità disgregata, che riflette una natura “aperta”, sensibile nei confronti dell’alterità. Lungi dal costituire un motivo di imbarazzo, come avrebbe voluto la propaganda greca antiromana, la tradizione dell’Asilo aperto da Romolo a schiavi e latitanti sulla cima del Campidoglio, divenne per i Romani una “figura del ricordo”, capace di riassumere la loro specificità culturale, e di ispirarne la condotta politica in campo internazionale.

La prima parte del corso (La città italiana nel Medioevo: storia e istituzioni) comprende una illustrazione e una discussione delle principali linee evolutive dei Comuni italiani. Seguendo e partecipando attivamente a queste lezioni, lo studente affronta lo studio del manuale di Elisa Occhipinti con maggiore facilità. La discussione dei vari argomenti è sempre accompagnata dalla lettura di alcuni documenti originali, utili sia a chiarire ulteriormente quegli argomenti, sia a comprendere la tipologia delle fonti disponibili per l’Italia del Basso Medioevo.

La seconda parte del corso (Conflitti politici e progettazione urbana a Roma a metà Quattrocento: Stefano Porcari e Leon Battista Alberti), di carattere monografico, è un approfondimento su un periodo e su una tematica specifici scelti nell’ambito della storia basso-medievale. Il lavoro svolto in aula con gli studenti è molto più analitico e si basa in gran parte – dopo una illustrazione generale del docente – sulla lettura di fonti di carattere storiografico e letterario, di documenti. Tra gli altri, si leggeranno anche testi di Leon Battista Alberti, che serviranno a comprendere i più significativi interventi urbanistici realizzati dai pontefici a Roma per sottolineare il loro pieno dominio della città.

Archeology of cult and ritual practice.

Starting from an introduction on the main aspects of Greek religion (polytheism, anthropomorphism, continuity / discontinuity with the Mycenaean world, cult of heroes, etc.), the course will address some of the main aspects of archeology of cult:
- the ritual, as a concrete and founding manifestation of religious activity, whose various expressions, connected to the most diverse occasions, can be reconstructed through the study of literary and material testimonies and therefore of textual (literary and historical) and contextual (archaeological) data ;
- the construction typologies of cult and their functions: altar, temple, thesauròs, hestiatòrion, stoà, etc .;
- the votive offering as a ritual practice to establish a relationship with the divinity and an instrument for defining one's social status and the votive deposit as a coherent set of materials, of different typology and nature, result of an intentional action;
- sacrifice, as one of the most important expressions of Greek ritual practice that often leaves important direct and indirect archaeological evidence;
- the image of divinity, as a material manifestation of the divine between the notions of anàthema and àgalma;
- artisanal manufacturing for the sacred consumption: the votive terracottas;
- the funeral ritual: relevance in the cult practice, social significance and archaeological evidence.

The first section, initiated by the analysis of the terms 'currency' and 'coins', provides an introduction to numismatics as a historical and archaeological discipline and continues with an analysis of the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of coins, of production techniques, the organization of mints, the origin of coined metals.
The second section aims to trace a history of the coin from the pre-monetary phases up to the medieval age. Attention will also be paid to the relationships between the different categories of sources: numismatic documentation, archaeological documentation and written sources. The multidisciplinary approach makes it possible to deal with the study of the role of currency in the economy and in ancient and medieval societies.
The participation in the activities of the 'Numismatics Laboratory' offers the opportunity to know the general criteria of identification and study of numismatic finds through the cataloguing of specimens that came to light during the archaeological activities promoted by the academic staff.

Roman epic poetry from the beginnings to Vergil's Aeneid

The course is focused on Roman epic poetry, which occupy the first place, in Rome as in Greece, in the literary genres' hierarchy, and aims to propose a diachronic history from the beginnings to the Augustan age. A short introduction will be devoted to literary genres in Rome, to the relationship between Roman and Greek literature and to Greek epic's peculiar features. Important texts of Roman epic tradition will be examinated. The first section will concerne archaic epic, from Livius Andronicus' translation of Homer's Odissey, to Naevius' historic poem, to Ennius' Annales, which represent a milestone in Roman literary history. In the second section there will be an in-depth examination of late republican development of epic poetry, which sees a deep transformation of literary style and produces new forms (especially the neoteric epyllion), but knows also Lucretius' didaschalic epic, which forges a new philosophic as well as poetic language without forgetting archaic main models. Finally careful attention will be devoted to Vergil's Aeneid, masterpiece of the Augustan age and of the whole Western culture. All the texts will be analysed in their historical-cultural context, read and commented, paying peculiar attention to the genre tradition and to intertextual links which unite authors with their models.
