Archeologia medievale
(objectives)
The aim of the course is to provide students with a level of learning that satisfies a basic knowledge of the subject with the possibility of knowing and understanding the archaeological methodology with which the great themes of the Middle Ages are addressed.. Expected results are, in addition to the knowledge of the topics covered, the ability to communicate the acquired data. The course is divided into two parts: a first part of a general nature where the main themes concerning medieval archeology will be introduced. The main study methodologies faced by medieval archeology will be illustrated, in broad terms: funerary archeology, urban archeology, architecture archeology and production archeology. 12 frontal lessons of two hours each will be dedicated to this first part of the course. In the second part, this year we will talk about fortified systems in the city and countryside between the 11th and 14th centuries, with particular attention to the organization of the municipal city. 12 frontal lessons of two hours each will be dedicated to this topic.

The course is divided into two parts: a first part of a general nature where the main topics concerning medieval archeology will be introduced, to which 12 lectures of two hours each will be dedicated; in the second part of the course a specific theme will be taken in the field of medieval archeology, in the light of the most recent acquisitions; also this second part will be carried out with 12 lectures of two hours each.

A first core of lessons will be devoted to presenting a brief history of the studies and highlighting the value of the technical and executive know-how of a work of art in art and restoration studies. The examination of some examples will follow through a methodological path that will use the reading of sources, literature, direct observation of original works of art and their documentation. Wide space will be devoted to the analysis and recognition of material testimonies that are the basic elements for the study of techniques. Particular attention will also be given to the understanding of the organization of the paintings of the past and the use of materials. Exercises and visits to museums and monuments will be an integral part of the course.
