The mail objective of this course is to raise students' awareness in the translation of different types of texts. The importance of using the Italian language correctly when translating will also be stressed. Expected outcome: at least B1 CEFR level.

( syllabus)
The course will introduce students to the fundamental concepts of both theory and practice of translation in order to lead them to master the necessary translation tools according to the type of text. Emphasis will be placed on the study of the main morphosyntactic and grammatical structures of the English language and on the analysis of its main semantic, pragmatic and socio-cultural aspects which may affect the various translatological choices. We will then clarify the importance of the correct use of the Italian language in the light of such choices. Particular attention will also be paid to the contrastive aspects of English-Italian(-English) translation and to the difficulties that Italian speakers usually face in the study of English (e.g. phrasal verbs, idiomatic expressions, false friends, present perfect etc.). The course will embrace a hands-on approach aiming at the B1 level of the CEFR.

Spanish Language and Translation I
(objectives)
The aim of the course is to provide the theoretical and application tools necessary for students to acquire a linguistic competence at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, while developing basic skills (comprehension and production of written and oral texts) in an integrated way. Through the use of authentic texts in Spanish, therefore, we will try to get them used to performing fundamental linguistic and communicative operations: explaining, summarizing, paraphrasing, etc. Students will start the study of translation and translation studies, dealing with the following topics: difference between translation and translation studies; intersemiotic, interlinguistic and intralinguistic translation; purpose of translation; classes, types and methods of translation; text genres and types of translation; the translation of specialty texts; translation competence, error and evaluation of the translation. Through the study of pragmatics and discourse analysis, an attempt will be made to develop a communicative approach in the use of the foreign language, thus learning to "package" texts / speeches appropriate to the context, the recipients and the purpose of the event. Students will be trained to interpret and use specialty texts, from the legal to the economic and technical-scientific fields, analyzing their lexical and morphosyntactic characteristics.

During the course will be used as practical tool texts in sectorial languages, or lenguas de especialidad, in the mass media, legal and journalistic sphere . Short texts will be analyzed to recognize their particularities and will be translated and discussed together in some practical and seminar lectures. The course also aims to introduce the study of translation and translation theory with linguistic, textual and hermeneutical focusing through the presentation of the major translatological theories in history. Activities will be implemented and enriched, during the semester, by meetings with journalists, presentations and interviews with theorists of Spanish language and literature as well as translation. The language of is mainly Italian but there will be speeches and comments also in Spanish

Tolstoy’s women Tolstoy had all his life long a conflictual relationship with women. Personification of this conflicts was his wife, Sofia Andreevna, whom he considered both a trustworthy partner and a terrible enemy. In his main work all this leads to polyhedric characters, in incessant evolution and deny. The course aims to analize this constant change through the female characters of the three main works of Tolstoy, “War and Peace”, “Anna Karenina” and “Resurrection” and the novella “The Kreutzer Sonata”.

Course: Modern Languages Teaching
Description: The purpose of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge in the field of language teaching. The first module of the course addresses the core principles of language learning and teaching; it provides a historical overview of educational theory and explores current theories, methodologies and issues for the teaching of languages. Le "Satire" di Orazio tra diàtriba e commedia
Il titolo originale delle satire di Orazio, "sermones", ci riconduce, in certo qual modo, a quella forma di divulgazione orale della filosofia cinico-stoica che prese il nome di "diàtriba": una sorta di predica, dal tono concitato, che mirava a scuotere i passanti, cui il filosofo di strada si rivolgeva, dalla loro apatia e dai loro errori. La presenza della diàtriba è evidente nelle satire oraziane, come nelle opere di altri autori latini dell'età tardo-repubblicana e della prima età imperiale, ma lo stesso Orazio riconduce l'origine dei suoi componimenti satirici alla commedia greca più antica, quella di Aristofane, caratterizzata dalla mordacità degli attacchi ad personam. Attraverso la lettura delle "Satire" cercheremo di discernere, nei testi di Orazio, le componenti diatribiche da quelle riconducibili alla tradizione più propriamente satirica, due componenti che però Orazio seppe fondere armonicamente, grazie al suo grande talento poetico

This course is designed to introduce students to the critical interpretation of philosophical-political texts, through the discussion of Tommaso Campanella's "The city of the Sun"
The course will enable students to:
1. recognize the main features of Campanella's political thought in his historical and philosophical context 2. discuss particular statements and views of the author. 3. read and comment his texts 4. present their own reflections about the topics discussed in the course 5. prepare a short oral report about one of the texts suggested
