Degree Course: SCIENZE DELLA POLITICA, DELLA SICUREZZA INTERNAZIONALE E DELLA COMUNICAZIONE PUBBLICA (LM-62) Syllabus for A.Y. 2018/2019  

In the first part of the course we will work to acquire an appropriate basic terminology and a better understanding of the mechanisms of human (verbal and non-verbal) communication. In this context, some of the main theoretical semiotic researches will be discussed and used in a practical way.
Particular attention will be given to understanding the notions of "medium-media", "multimedia" and "modality" related to the concept of "textuality" in semiotics.
The last part of the course will introduce textual strategies with concrete examples of media texts and practices. Applications will have a very varied panorama, as in today's world, increasingly crossed by processes of intermediality, crossmediality and transmediality between different media (press, cinema, radio, TV, internet).

The course shall develop skills in English as the main language of communication in Political English, International Relations and English for the Media and it will be divided in two parts:

1) A functional approach to English grammar as applied to reading and comprehension of a corpus of printed texts;
2) An analysis of the texts and the practice of concentrating essential information through summary making.

All students must download from the Moodle platform the Dispensa LINGUA INGLESE PER LM62 PROF. GALLI 2017-18. Other teaching modules will be available on line with the same procedure.

It is consented the use of the Oxford English Dictionary – Monolingual.

First of all, the course will offer students a historical overview of European colonialism. The second part will be devoted to examine moments and aspects of Italian colonialism from the liberal age to Second War World. In the last part, it will analyze the topic of the loss of Italian colonies in the broader context of decolonization process.

The course will explore the link between political philosophy, moral philosophy and issues related to communication. The lectures will focus in particular on the relationship between democracy and communication. If we start from a definition of democracy that also includes a normative element, we must use a concept of communication intended as informed participation in decision-making processes and debates that precede them. and that follow them. In particular, we will analyze some key texts of Jürgen Habermas, one of the most important political philosophers of the twentieth century. The course will be organized according to two sections: after an accurate presentation of the author and the philosophical tradition to which it belongs, we will explain in detail a brief text in which Habermas attempt to demonstrate how democracy, the ethic founded on universalistic principles and the discourse imply each other. The first major work by Habermas will then be studied, developing the link between politics and communication by studying the ways in which the concept of public opinion was formed in Europe and what concrete forms the public sphere took between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries.

The Course illustrates how the Political and Economic Geography, and the Ecological and Environmental Protection Politics work closely interrelated, and constitute an essential issue in the political, cultural and social international arena of our times.
