(syllabus)
The course aims to trace the history of the discipline's evolution, starting with the distinction between Museology, Museography, and Museum Studies, with the aim of investigating the functioning and role of museums in today's society. After the glorious period of reconstruction following World War II and the subsequent protests and crises of the 1960s and 1970s, in the 21st century museums seem to have been transformed into easy stages for influencers hunting for followers or places of action for political activists seeking media attention. However, behind this apparent and superficial image, museums continue to be places of education and research for scholars, students, and the simply curious, but also places where new highly specialized professional figures are developed. Part of the course will therefore be dedicated to issues related to the profession of ‘Museologist’, such as: the organisation and display of a collection, the handling of sculptures and paintings, the organisation of storage facilities, exhibition design, lighting, microclimate and museum security. For archaeology and art history students a common course of studies has been envisaged, integrated by specialistic contributions dedicated only to them.
