DE SANCTIS Dino
(syllabus)
The course aims to analyze the diachronic journey through which Greek and Latin literary texts have reached our days. A) In the first part of the course, the writing materials used in antiquity for the transmission of texts will be studied: tablets, ostraca, and papyri, as well as the parchment codex, which gradually replaced the papyrus roll in a slow but inexorable transition from the 1st to the 6th century AD. The phases during which this new book form gained prominence will be analyzed: medieval scriptoria and Byzantine Orient, followed by the Renaissance and the printing of the first major editiones principes.
