(syllabus)
The course aims at providing students with a firm grasp of the theories of international trade and the theoretical tools required to interpret international economic relations in a context of globalization. At the end of the course, students will be able to - Recognise and understand the relevant patterns of international trade, identify their differences on the basis of the underlying assumptions and understand their distributional effects at country, sector or specific factor level. - Apply the knowledge acquired through analysis of trade policy strategies, free trade theories and those that support restrictions on free trade. - Have autonomy of judgment and include articles, reports and documents that analyse the measures of a commercial nature implemented by different countries. - Learn, interpret and analyse the most relevant phenomena of international trade.
In particular, the course covers the following topics: - An Overview of world trade: the gravity model and the historical evolution of trade patterns - The Ricardian Model - A Model of a Two-Factor Economy - Heckscher-Ohlin Model - Economies of Scale, Imperfect Competition, and International Trade - The Instruments of Trade Policy - The Political Economy of Trade Policy - Trade Policy in Developing Countries - Controversies in Trade Policy
