DE SANCTIS Dino
(syllabus)
In 412 BC, during the difficult period of the seizure of Decelea, Euripides staged an innovative tragedy in Athens in Greek literature: Helen. Within this tragedy with a happy ending, there are a number of peculiar components: the motif of the double, the opposition between truth and opinion, the theme of absolution, and not least the political disagreement between Athens and Sparta. The course aims to examine the main features of Euripides' Helen and to observe some to observe some of these in the literary production of the 19th and 20th centuries. Particular importance will be given, for instance, to Ghiannis Ritsos' Helen, which was written during the poet's exile in Karlovasi of Samo in August 1970, and today appears as an interesting example of dramatic rewriting.
