1. Importance of the bioeconomy for the national economy, with particular reference to the agri-food sector. 2. Introduction of some completed and ongoing research: consumer choices (healthy foods), producer choices (use of chemical inputs, GHG emissions investments in digital technologies for agriculture). 3. Introduction to economic theory: a. Definitions, circular flow diagram, production possibilities frontier and opportunity cost. b. Market supply and demand functions and their determinants. c. Market equilibrium. d. Price elasticity of quantity demanded and quantity supplied: characteristics of the agri-food sector. e. Effects on the market of the application of economic policy instruments. f. Consumer theory: total utility, marginal utility, indifference curves and optimal choices. g. Producer theory: entrepreneur's profit, analysis of the individual components (product price, quantity produced). h. Production function with a variable production factor. i. Environmentally sustainable production. j. Production function with 2 variable factors: isoquant and isocost functions, and optimal choices. k. Type of costs in the short and long term. l. Cost geometry in the short run. m. Market in perfect competition: characteristics, consequences, different profit situations (positive, zero, negative), entry and exit from the market. 4. Technological innovation, value and protection of intellectual property. 5. Theory on cost-benefit analysis. Classroom exercise on the application of cost-benefit analysis to a traditional genetic improvement program and to one based on Assisted Evolution Technologies (AET). 7. Types of farms, farmers and employees in the agri-food sector. 8. Capitals classification and evaluation criteria. 9. Characteristics of Italian farms. Illustration and analysis of data from the 7th general agricultural census. 10. Economic balance sheet: structure and contents of the balance sheet and the income statement. 11. Illustration of an educational Business Plan. 12. Community strategies and policies: bioeconomy strategies, Green Deal, Farm to Fork. 13. Illustration of the case studies underlying the exam and the methods for drafting the written report and the presentation being examined.
