An increasingly polluted world: history, definition, and environmental hazards of the most important classes of anthropogenic pollutants, from heavy metals to the new global contaminants. Sources, mechanisms of dispersion, persistence, and degradability: definition, examples. Bioaccumulation and biomagnification: definition, examples. Intensive agriculture and the use of pesticides: benefits and collateral effects (group exercise on 2 case studies). Livestock farming and the use of hormonal compounds: benefits and collateral effects. Psychoactive drugs, pollutants, and behavioural ecotoxicology: mechanisms of action and effects on humans and wildlife. The concept of toxicity: acute and chronic effects, including transgenerational effects. Ecotoxicological assays and environmental regulations. Biological indicators: definition, application and examples (group exercise on 2 case studies). Ecotoxicological and toxicological risk assessment.

The textbook "Ecotossicologia" (Marco Vighi and Eros Bacci - UTET) is useful but NOT necessary for the exam preparation. All the material needed for the exam will be provided by the lecturer during the in-class lectures/exercises in the form of slides and peer-reviewed scientific articles.
