MODULE I Study of bodi functions: introduction to physiology, homeostasis and feedback control, main biomolecules. Cellular structure and physiology: plasma membrane and associated structures, cytoplasm and its organelles, diffusion, osmosis and transport, membrane potential, cellular communication. Nervous system: neurons and supporting cells, electrical activity of axons, synapses, neurotransmitters, synaptic integration, central nervous system, sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Endocrine system: glands and hormones, mechanisms of action of hormones, pituitary gland, adrenal glands, pancreas and other endocrine glands. Muscle: skeletal muscles, contraction mechanisms, energy needs of skeletal muscles, nervous control of skeletal muscles, cardiac muscle and smooth muscles. Blood, heart and circulation: functions and components of the circulatory system, cardiac cycle, electrical activity of the heart and electrocardiogram, atherosclerosis and cardiac arrhythmias, lymphatic system, cardiac output, blood flow to the heart and skeletal muscles, cerebral and cutaneous blood flow, blood pressure. Physiology of breathing: respiratory system, physical aspects of ventilation, respiratory mechanics, gas exchange in the lungs, regulation of breathing, transport of hemoglobin and oxygen, transport of carbon dioxide, effect of physical exercise and high altitude on respiratory functions. Renal physiology: structure and function of the kidneys, glomerular filtration, reabsorption of salt and water, renal plasma clearance, renal control of electrolyte and acid-base balance. Digestive system: esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, liver, gallbladder and pancreas, regulation of the digestive system, digestion and absorption of food.
