The course is 56 hours long (7 CFU) and iams to introduce students at the basis of cartography, especially at the usage of geographic information systems. During the course, history of cartography, traditional definitions and concepts of cartography will be provided (types of maps, scale, projection systems, etc.) as well as issues about digital cartography (rasters, vectors). Base knowledge of querying territorial information systems will be given, in order to edit a personal SIT. At the end of the course, the student has to be familiar with the main softwares of digital cartography, web GIS, and Web Map Service systems.

(objectives)
The course is aimed at providing the basic knowledge on the representation of the territory as well as some essential elements related to forest construction. The student must acquire the fundamental knowledge concerning the methods, tools and operations for the survey and observation of the territory and the principles and tools for its representation. The student should be able to use the most common and frequent IT tools for the representation of spatial data. Basic knowledge of forest construction is also provided.

Survey and representation of the territory Reference surfaces, angle, distance, elevation, height difference, slope. Notes on the operations of relief Measurement of angles and distances. Planimetric survey methods: intersections, open and closed polygons. Detail relief. Elevation survey methods: leveling. Graphic rendering of the relief: quoted plan, level curve plan. GNSS system: General information, operating principles, methods of carrying out the survey using GNSS. Earth observation systems Principles of remote sensing, main Earth Observation missions, analysis of remote sensing images Review of the main cartographic projection systems.
