(objectives)
The aim of the course is to provide students with all the theoretical knowledge and practical skills for carrying out chemical determinations on liquid matrix. Another objective is to understand how and to what extent soil analysis and therefore knowledge of its characteristics can influence and improve its agronomic management. Other objectives common to all modules are: ability to read and interpret an analysis sheet of a sample, be it soil or substrate; knowledge of the fundamental parameters for the physical and chemical characterization and classification of a soil or substrate; acquisition of the methods for carrying out a complete analysis of a soil or substrate sample from sampling to the drafting of the final report according to the methods reported in the Official Gazette.

(syllabus)
During this course, all the main physical and chemical analysis of soil and substrates will be taken into consideration and analyzed in detail first with theoretical explanations and then with practical exercises in the laboratory (where possible according to the availability of university laboratories). Starting from the sampling (methods, type of sampling, choice of the area to be sampled, and number of samples) all the methods of the analysis will be explained by referring to what is reported in the Official Gazette. The topics covered will be (theory and practice): granulometry and texture (methods of analysis, main fractions and ISSS and USDA classifications, colloids, texture triangle with practical explanation of its use and inclusion of the soil under examination in the category it belongs to, method of wet sieving with Andreasen polisher, empirical method); soil structure (ISS, aggregates, role of cations and laboratory determination of the stability of the structure with the wet sieving method); determination of porosity, apparent density and real density, use of pycnometer; determination of water content according to the thermo-gravimetric method, water potential and its determination in a pressure chamber, creation of a water retention curve with identification of saturation points, field capacity and wilting point, determination of available water (AFU and RFU); pH and its measurement; salinity (ESP, GSB and GIB), measurement of electrical conductivity and buffer capacity; active fractions of the soil limestone (total and active and respective methods of analysis) and organic matter (its physical and chemical functions in the soil/substrate, methods of analysis for the determination of organic carbon and its subsequent conversion into organic matter, the C/N ratio); the macroelements Nitrogen (importance, determination of total nitrogen with the Kjieldahl method, determination of nitric and ammonia ions with a specific electrode) Phosphorus (importance, analysis of assimilable phosphorus with the Olsen method) Potassium (importance, determination of exchangeable potassium, the Mg/K ratio); microelements (importance and danger, Iron, Aluminium, Silicon, Manganese, Boron, Sulfur and their determination) and heavy metals (Cadmium, Cobalt, Chromium, Manganese, Nickel, Lead, Copper and Zinc danger, sources and their determinations); Insights on water (sampling methods and main analysis for irrigation or fertigation or for use in hydroponic crops); the main substrates used in agriculture and fundamental analysis for each of them according to the class they belong to (mineral and organic substrates).
