(objectives)
The WILDLIFE course aims to provide the student with a theoretical/practical knowledge that allows him to give a professional contribution useful to the wildlife managemnet planning of the agro-forest territory. At this sxcope, the course will provide informations on the biology, ecology and ethology of the some species of both conservation and hunting interest in the Italian territory, with particular regard to those of central Italy. Thehuman-wildlife intercations interactions, often conflicting (damage to crops, forest renewal, predation, interference with the road system, etc.), require the knowledge of monitoring techniques (qualitative and quantitative). In addition, the strategies and techniques aimed at increasing species' of conservation concern and controlling those problematic, in both protected and huntable territories, will be discussed. In particular, the intention is to provide the student with: 1. basic knowledge of ecology applied to wildlife management; 2. basic knowledge of the relationship between wildlife and biotic and abiotic components characterizing the ecosystems (agricultural, zootechnical, forestry, urban/peri-urban) within which they interact; 3. Habitat suitability Modelling (HSI); 4. knowledge of the fundamental aspects of wildlife management in natural, semi-natural and anthropic environments, 5. knowledge of a) the morphology, biology, ecology and ethology of some species of particular interest typically linked to mountain ecosystems, b) the monitoring, counting and estimation methods, 6. knowledge of native, para-autochthonous and allochthonous problematic and/or invasive species (Alien Invasive Species); 7. knowledge of interactions between wildlife and human activities: threat factors, impacts and mitigation methods/strategies; 8. knowledge of the main international, national and regional lows and regulations (Law 157/92, of Regional Law 17/95 for regional implementation and of the rules on wildlife planning, hunting and wildlife control. Law 394/91, the regional low 29/97 and D.P.R. 357/97).

VIOLA PAOLO
(syllabus)
Frontal lessons including seminars:
• Introduction to the course: hints of ecology applied to wildlife management. Definitions of species, population and metapopulation. Population parameters; • Wildlife-hunting management concepts: monitoring, wildlife inputs, sustainable harvesting; • Wildlife-hunting planning and reference legislation; • Habitat suitability modelling (HSI): general information and study methods; • Ecological models; • Environmental improvements (periodic, permanent, etc.); • Main techniques for monitoring and counting wild populations; • Systematic classification of Italian ungulates with elements of biology, ecology and management (cervids, bovids and suidae); • Systematic classification of Italian lagomorphs with elements of biology, ecology and management; • Elements of biology, ecology and management of the wolf; • Elements of biology, ecology and management of the brown bear (focus on Ursus arctos marsicanus); • Elements of birds' biology, ecology and management (focus on mountain galliformes and woodcock); • Elements of biology, ecology and management of non-native species (case studies on Myocastor coypus and Canada goose); • Human-wildlife interactions and conflicts: types of impacts and methods/strategies of contrast.
Field exercises:
Wildlife monitoring: participation in counting/census sessions, Wildlife captive production and ex situ conservation: visits to wildlife breeding farms.
The opportunity/possibility of organizing seminars and educational activities at a) Castelporziano Presidential Estate (RM) for advanced information on Eurasian woodcock monitoring and the management of some problematic ungulates (wild boar in particular ) and b) Mezzano Valley (FE) for advanced knowledge on reintroduction and monitoring methods of a galliform species linked to traditional cereal agro-ecosystems (the case study of grey partridge - Life Perdix), will be discussed with students and the CCS.
