PETRILLI Raffaella
(syllabus)
The course presents the two main types of languages used in contemporary public discourse, the agonistic language and the cooperative language. They allow us to observe and explain widespread phenomena in contemporary public communication, such as hate speech or the dissemination of false news To describe the characteristics of the competitive and cooperative language, some critical tools will be introduced: - the notions of "emotion", "information" and "argumentation" discussed in the twentieth century by the sciences of language (semiological, historical, cognitive); - the relationship between cooperative language and democracy; - the definition of hate speech, a typical example of competitive language. Subsequently, the linguistic indexes of agonistic and of cooperative communcation will be presented. They will allow to distinguish, even empirically, the texts that use competitive language and the texts that use cooperative language.
