The Nobel Prize for Literature has been awarded six times to Spanish-American authors, different from each other in terms of themes and forms of expression: in 1945 to the Chilean Gabriela Mistral, the poetess of pain and the mystery of life; in 1967 to Miguel Ángel Asturias author of "texts deeply rooted in national individuality and indigenous traditions" of Guatemala; in 1971 to Pablo Neruda, singer of love and freedom; in 1982 to Gabriel García Márquez the undisputed symbol of the Latin American boom, master of magical realism; in 1990 to Octavio Paz poet, philosopher and essayist, interpreter of Mexican identity and society and finally in 2010 to Mario Vargas Llosa, multifaceted narrator, capable of creating a personal "image of the resistance, revolt and defeat of the individual". The study of their works will allow to know at the same time the historical-cultural aspects and the different literary forms developed in their respective countries. The course will be supplemented by the viewing of documentaries and film adaptations of some literary works.
