The course aims to teach the fundamentals of comparative and historical linguistics, through the presentation of the principles and problems of historical analysis of medieval and modern Romance languages and texts, with particular reference to the issues of Latin-Romance transition.
EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS At the end of the course, students are expected to have learned the fundamental concepts of historical linguistics, as well as descriptive and historical notions on the history of late Latin, the of Proto-Romance and of the main medieval and modern Romance varieties.

The course consists of two parts, an institutional and a monographic one. 1) In its institutional part (4 credits, about 24 academic hours) the course will present the history and basics of historical linguistics analysis. 2) The monographic part will be divided as follows: 2a) (4 credits, about 24 academic hours) training and the history of Romance languages, with particular reference to the transition from Late Latin to Romance; 2b) (2 credits, about 12 academic hours) historical-linguistic commentary on some Romance and Late Latin texts.
Section 2b is addressed to students of curriculum A, "Literature and civilization", who must obtain 10 credits in this exam. Students of curriculum B (8 credits) who still would like to attend the lessons of this last section will be welcome.
