Solon and Athens
The 6th century BC marks an important period for the rise of Athens in late-archaic Greece. In fact, at this stage, the main institutions that will become crucial in the fifth century begin to strengthen and take shape, in conjunction with the affirmation of protagonists of public life who will animate the aristocratic and democratic factions. Solon and Peisistratos, linked by a probable kinship, certainly divided on the ideological field, condition the debates and choices of Athens in this complex period. The course aims to analyze the figure of Solon on several levels: Solon will be seen as a political and intellectual in 6th century in light of his biography written by Plutarch; Solon will also be analyzed as a reformer through the portrait that Aristotle offers in the Constitution of the Athenians; finally Solon will be studied as a parenetic poet according to the testimony of the fragments that come from his elegies.
