Course title: I. Introduction to Latin Literature; II. Petronius' Satyricon
Programme: the course is divided in two parts: the first (16 hours) includes a wide introduction to Latin literature, focused on key elements for the discipline's study (literary genres; models; intertextuality; historical and literary contexts; themes; linguistic and stylistic codes; conservation and loss of texts; survivor); the second (32 hours) will be occupied by a monographic analysis of Petronius’ Satyricon: after an introduction devoted to the discussed origin of the Latin novel, examined in his relationships with Greek and Roman models (novels, epic poems, comedy), there will be an in-depth examination of Petronius’ novel, paying attention to his problematic features (author, age, structure, intentions) as well as to artistic peculiarities (irony, parody), with special attention to linguistic and stylistic aspects. Some important pages of the novel will be read and commented.
