The spread of Portuguese in the world: historical, linguistic and translation translatological route
PART A (25 hours): Portuguese in Brazil The first part of the course aims to provide theoretical skills on the historical evolution in diachronic perspective of the Brazilian variant from the sixteenth century up to our days in the different areas that make up today's Brazil. Besides a diachronic picture of the historical events that led to the diffusion of the communicative use of Portuguese for commercial and religious use (for evangelization campaigns) in the respective colonies during the Aviz dynasty, we will analyze the morpho-syntactic, phonetic and lexical differences between the Portuguese of Portugal and the Brazilian variant through comparative linguistic analysis with the use of authentic materials. The diachronic picture will be fundamental to analyze the evolution of the Portuguese language in Brazil, starting from the substrate languages (indigenous) and those of superstrate (African), enriched by adstrato languages (such as high German, Italian and Spanish).
PART B (25 hours): Portuguese in Africa and Asia The second part of the course has the task of analyzing, through a historical-political and socio-economic description, the dynamics developed in African and Asian territories that came into contact with the Lusitanian reality, focusing on the process of linguistic evolution that occurred in each area. The diatopic examination of the peculiarities of the Portuguese language in each zone of Lusitanian influence will be accompanied by wider considerations on local languages, as well as on pidgin and Creole developed in some area. Inside the diasystem of the Portuguese language, the course has the task of analyzing, in diachrony and synchrony, socio-cultural paths that led African countries, subject to the affirmation of the Lusitanian colonialism, to use Portuguese even after the independence. At the same time, the existence of a complex network of linguistic contacts and the inevitable persistence of local languages in Africa and Asia makes the CPLP (Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa) can be considered as a linguistic unit and a richly diversified territory at the same time.
PART C (10 hours): Translation laboratory In order to analyze the morpho-syntactic and lexical differences between the Brazilian variant and the canons of European Portuguese, a translation laboratory is proposed starting from the analysis of the novel Jubiabá by Jorge Amado (1912-2001), a text that offers an interesting cultural framework of the multi-faceted Brazilian reality.
