Sapienza, ESA and others
2014 2005
Atmospheric aerosol plays a crucial role in global climatic models, as it is well known that it acts as a radiative forcing factor. As a full-time researcher, he has established with the University of Tokyo (Prof. T. Nakajima director of the center for the study of climate systems) and with the PREDE company in Tokyo a decades-long technical-scientific collaboration agreement that involved the development of a methodology for determining the columnar content of atmospheric aerosol.
This technique involved: the creation of an instrument, named aureolameter for measuring the effects of the aerosol on the incident solar radiation seen under various angles with respect to the position of the sun. And of an inversion algorithm (Skyrad code) for the derivation of the optical thickness and of the complex refractive index of the aerosol.
After several years of improvements on software and hardware based on both laboratory tests and measurement field campaigns conducted in different locations around the world (Antarctica, Tierra del Fuego, Canada Pacific and Atlantic coasts etc) and in conjunction with similar and complementary measures carried out by foreign partners for the purpose of comparing results and methodologies, the system has been deemed suitable and reliable in order to use it in a geographical network monitoring atmospheric aerosol.
The Skynet network combines the one managed by NASA called
Aeronet but based on another instrument, and it is going to integrate it first in Asia and then in Europe. The European Skyrad users network, which includes all the European PREDE aureolameter users, was born later.
Collaborates with CNR Instituto di Struttura della Materia, Tor Vergata Roma, on the characterization of electronic and magnetic properties of diluted semiconductors. Also develops the necessary software to a home made measurement system called MOKE, able to assess the magnetization of samples based on their ability to rotate the plane of polarization of a laser beam incident on the surface of the sample itself.
2004
