Curriculum
Kawkab Tawfik is an ethnomusicologist and membres scientifiques à titre étranger at the Institut Français d'Archéologie Orientale du Caire (IFAO). She is currently the Diego Carpitella Fellow at Fondazione Cini in Venice, where she is producing a scientific documentary on Salila, the zar spirit of the water. She obtained her PhD in Cultural Heritage from Tor Vergata University of Rome in 2020, with research focusing on music, politics, and identity in Egypt. Her current research centres on ritual and trance music, particularly Egyptian zar and zikr practices. In her ethnographic work, she employs audiovisual documentation, along with a participatory approach, working closely with music practitioners and local communities.
Among her curatorial activities, she is the author of the ASWAT podcast of the Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris) and the scientific coordinator of the project ASWAT Music Heritage Insights at the IFAO.
