Degree Course: Languages and Cultures for International Communication Syllabus for A.Y. 2019/2020  

Topic of the course is the concept of Exophonie, connected with those of Heimat/ heimlich as well as migration and exhile, with some history hints from 1918 onward. A discussion about social and aesthetic categories connected to the theme will be considered (stygma, otherness, melting and so on). In a second part of the course (30 hours) German contemporary writers (Essays and fiction) will be analyzed, with a special focus on the isotopy of the Artist’s novel and the Intellectual novel (Kuenstlerroman e Gelehrtenroman).

Students will all read Dr. Faustus by Thomas Mann and three novels from the reading list below (a) discussing the choices with the teacher (one of the Novels must be in German, chosen according to the language level of students). Students will also choose a text from reading list b), to be read in the language they prefer, the literature book (foreign language students can ask for an English or German equivalent).

This course aimes at the knowledge of basic theories of lexical semantics for the analysis and study of meaning. It is also intended to provide a presentation of practical tools for semantic analysis (related to corpus linguistics) such as language corpora and concordance programs.

TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICAN DRAMA: PLAYS IN CONTEXT

This course aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of twentieth-century American drama, some of its most influential playwrights, its distinctive aesthetic and stylistic eclecticism, and its recurrent themes, metaphors, and motifs. Students will read six pivotal plays written by American and African American playwrights between 1941 and 1993, and they will explore the ways in which theatre, drama, and performance have contributed to the construction and deconstruction of an American identity. Although close reading and analysis of dramatic texts will be the main focus of the course, due attention will be paid to the theatrical, cultural, and historical contexts in which each play was conceived and produced, so that students will be able to understand American theatre history as a significant part of modern American cultural history. Besides encountering and learning to recognize a range of different dramatic styles, students will also examine the conflicting representations of American identity within each play, and will investigate the ways in which the six plays may connect with each other and with the broader American culture and experience.

The course aims to provide students with an introduction to historical sociolinguistics. The language studied will be the Tamil language, typologically distant from the European languages and spoken in the Southern area of ​​the Indian subcontinent.

Different typology of texts written in Tamil will be analysed and discussed taking into account their genre, function, writing support, and recipients of the text. The aim is to observe the linguistic variation and the linguistic change correlating it to extra-linguistic factors. The lexical and morphological levels will be observed.

Students are required to have a good acquaintance of the principles of Sociolinguistics and Historical Linguistics.

The course will offer a historical-cultural overview of Indian reality: the history of civilization, development of Tamil writing systems and literature, Tamil diglossia in historical perspective, contacts with other languages, ​​and civilizations.
In order to do that, Students will be also introduced to basic notions of Modern and Old grammar of Tamil. The teacher will provide transliterated texts and a glossary for personal practice and class readings. Students will be asked to analyse and discuss texts transmitted throughout a non-European writing system during classes and on their own as preparation to the exam.

Nella prima parte del corso, di carattere più generale, si esamineranno le ricadute che diversi filoni di ricerca nell’ambito delle scienze del linguaggio possono avere nella pratica dell’educazione linguistica. Nella seconda parte del corso, più specifica, si esamineranno le ricadute glottodidattiche dei principali costrutti e modelli elaborati dalla semantica lessicale per l’analisi dei fenomeni chiave del lessico (polisemia, ambiguità, metafore, espressioni idiomatiche).
Le ultime 12 ore del corso (riservate agli studenti del curriculum "Letterature e civiltà" che devono ottenere 10 CFU in questo esame) saranno dedicate a esaminare più in dettaglio alcuni aspetti della didattica del lessico; la partecipazione a queste lezioni è comunque aperta a tutti gli studenti.

La crisis de fin de siglo y la novela española de principios del siglo XX

Objetivo del curso es el estudio de la literatura española de las últimas décadas del siglo XIX y principio del siglo XX a través del comentario de algunas novelas representativas de la época.
En España, la crisis de valores propia del fin de siglo se acentúa a causa de los graves conflictos con los que el país tiene que enfrentarse. Tras la pérdida de las últimas colonias, (el desastre del 98), los intelectuales empiezan una campaña de crítica a la situación política, histórica y cultural, realizando importantes cambios en la cultura española de siglo XX. Este momento de renovación ideológica y artística ha permitido a la crítica calificar esta etapa como la Edad de Plata de las letras españolas.
El curso se articula en dos partes: en la primera parte se estudia el contexto histórico y cultural en la que se forma y vive la generación del 98. En la segunda se comentarán críticamente algunas de las obras más representativas de los autores de la generación, enfocando la peculiar contribución de algunos autores al género novelístico en las primeras décadas del siglo XX.

TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICAN DRAMA: PLAYS IN CONTEXT

This course aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of twentieth-century American drama, some of its most influential playwrights, its distinctive aesthetic and stylistic eclecticism, and its recurrent themes, metaphors, and motifs. Students will read six pivotal plays written by American and African American playwrights between 1941 and 1993, and they will explore the ways in which theatre, drama, and performance have contributed to the construction and deconstruction of an American identity. Although close reading and analysis of dramatic texts will be the main focus of the course, due attention will be paid to the theatrical, cultural, and historical contexts in which each play was conceived and produced, so that students will be able to understand American theatre history as a significant part of modern American cultural history. Besides encountering and learning to recognize a range of different dramatic styles, students will also examine the conflicting representations of American identity within each play, and will investigate the ways in which the six plays may connect with each other and with the broader American culture and experience.

The theme of history, and of the narration of history, is a leitmotif of postmodern thinkers and novelists. In the summer of 1970, an international team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology began a study of the implications of continued worldwide growth. They examined the five basic factors that determine and, in their interactions, ultimately limit growth on this planet-population increase, agricultural production, nonrenewable resource depletion, industrial output, and pollution generation. The MIT team fed data on these five factors into a global computer model and then tested the behaviour of the model under several sets of assumptions to determine alternative patterns for mankind’s future. The Limits to Growth is the nontechnical report of their findings. The book contains a message of hope, as well: Man can create a society in which he can live indefinitely on earth if he imposes limits on himself and his production of material goods to achieve a state of global equilibrium with population and production in carefully selected balance.

Topic of the course is the concept of Exophonie, connected with those of Heimat/ heimlich as well as migration and exhile, with some history hints from 1918 onward. A discussion about social and aesthetic categories connected to the theme will be considered (stygma, otherness, melting and so on). In a second part of the course (30 hours) German contemporary writers (Essays and fiction) will be analyzed, with a special focus on the isotopy of the Artist’s novel and the Intellectual novel (Kuenstlerroman e Gelehrtenroman).

Students will all read Dr. Faustus by Thomas Mann and three novels from the reading list below (a) discussing the choices with the teacher (one of the Novels must be in German, chosen according to the language level of students). Students will also choose a text from reading list b), to be read in the language they prefer, the literature book (foreign language students can ask for an English or German equivalent).

TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICAN DRAMA: PLAYS IN CONTEXT

This course aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of twentieth-century American drama, some of its most influential playwrights, its distinctive aesthetic and stylistic eclecticism, and its recurrent themes, metaphors, and motifs. Students will read six pivotal plays written by American and African American playwrights between 1941 and 1993, and they will explore the ways in which theatre, drama, and performance have contributed to the construction and deconstruction of an American identity. Although close reading and analysis of dramatic texts will be the main focus of the course, due attention will be paid to the theatrical, cultural, and historical contexts in which each play was conceived and produced, so that students will be able to understand American theatre history as a significant part of modern American cultural history. Besides encountering and learning to recognize a range of different dramatic styles, students will also examine the conflicting representations of American identity within each play, and will investigate the ways in which the six plays may connect with each other and with the broader American culture and experience.

The course aims to provide students with an introduction to historical sociolinguistics. The language studied will be the Tamil language, typologically distant from the European languages and spoken in the Southern area of ​​the Indian subcontinent.

Different typology of texts written in Tamil will be analysed and discussed taking into account their genre, function, writing support, and recipients of the text. The aim is to observe the linguistic variation and the linguistic change correlating it to extra-linguistic factors. The lexical and morphological levels will be observed.

Nella prima parte del corso, di carattere più generale, si esamineranno le ricadute che diversi filoni di ricerca nell’ambito delle scienze del linguaggio possono avere nella pratica dell’educazione linguistica. Nella seconda parte del corso, più specifica, si esamineranno le ricadute glottodidattiche dei principali costrutti e modelli elaborati dalla semantica lessicale per l’analisi dei fenomeni chiave del lessico (polisemia, ambiguità, metafore, espressioni idiomatiche).
Le ultime 12 ore del corso (riservate agli studenti del curriculum "Letterature e civiltà" che devono ottenere 10 CFU in questo esame) saranno dedicate a esaminare più in dettaglio alcuni aspetti della didattica del lessico; la partecipazione a queste lezioni è comunque aperta a tutti gli studenti.

This course aimes at the knowledge of basic theories of lexical semantics for the analysis and study of meaning. It is also intended to provide a presentation of practical tools for semantic analysis (related to corpus linguistics) such as language corpora and concordance programs.
A part of the course will be dedicated to the practice of translation.

he message of this book still holds today: The earth’s interlocking resources – the global system of nature in which we all live – probably cannot support present rates of economic and population growth much beyond the year 2100, if that long, even with advanced technology. In the summer of 1970, an international team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology began a study of the implications of continued worldwide growth. They examined the five basic factors that determine and, in their interactions, ultimately limit growth on this planet-population increase, agricultural production, nonrenewable resource depletion, industrial output, and pollution generation. The MIT team fed data on these five factors into a global computer model and then tested the behaviour of the model under several sets of assumptions to determine alternative patterns for mankind’s future. The Limits to Growth is the nontechnical report of their findings. The book contains a message of hope, as well: Man can create a society in which he can live indefinitely on earth if he imposes limits on himself and his production of material goods to achieve a state of global equilibrium with population and production in carefully selected balance.

he message of this book still holds today: The earth’s interlocking resources – the global system of nature in which we all live – probably cannot support present rates of economic and population growth much beyond the year 2100, if that long, even with advanced technology. In the summer of 1970, an international team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology began a study of the implications of continued worldwide growth. They examined the five basic factors that determine and, in their interactions, ultimately limit growth on this planet-population increase, agricultural production, nonrenewable resource depletion, industrial output, and pollution generation. The MIT team fed data on these five factors into a global computer model and then tested the behaviour of the model under several sets of assumptions to determine alternative patterns for mankind’s future. The Limits to Growth is the nontechnical report of their findings. The book contains a message of hope, as well: Man can create a society in which he can live indefinitely on earth if he imposes limits on himself and his production of material goods to achieve a state of global equilibrium with population and production in carefully selected balance.

Topic of the course is the concept of Exophonie, connected with those of Heimat/ heimlich as well as migration and exhile, with some history hints from 1918 onward. A discussion about social and aesthetic categories connected to the theme will be considered (stygma, otherness, melting and so on). In a second part of the course (30 hours) German contemporary writers (Essays and fiction) will be analyzed, with a special focus on the isotopy of the Artist’s novel and the Intellectual novel (Kuenstlerroman e Gelehrtenroman).

Students will all read Dr. Faustus by Thomas Mann and three novels from the reading list below (a) discussing the choices with the teacher (one of the Novels must be in German, chosen according to the language level of students). Students will also choose a text from reading list b), to be read in the language they prefer, the literature book (foreign language students can ask for an English or German equivalent).

TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICAN DRAMA: PLAYS IN CONTEXT

This course aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of twentieth-century American drama, some of its most influential playwrights, its distinctive aesthetic and stylistic eclecticism, and its recurrent themes, metaphors, and motifs. Students will read six pivotal plays written by American and African American playwrights between 1941 and 1993, and they will explore the ways in which theatre, drama, and performance have contributed to the construction and deconstruction of an American identity. Although close reading and analysis of dramatic texts will be the main focus of the course, due attention will be paid to the theatrical, cultural, and historical contexts in which each play was conceived and produced, so that students will be able to understand American theatre history as a significant part of modern American cultural history. Besides encountering and learning to recognize a range of different dramatic styles, students will also examine the conflicting representations of American identity within each play, and will investigate the ways in which the six plays may connect with each other and with the broader American culture and experience.

The course aims to provide students with an introduction to historical sociolinguistics. The language studied will be the Tamil language, typologically distant from the European languages and spoken in the Southern area of ​​the Indian subcontinent.

Different typology of texts written in Tamil will be analysed and discussed taking into account their genre, function, writing support, and recipients of the text. The aim is to observe the linguistic variation and the linguistic change correlating it to extra-linguistic factors. The lexical and morphological levels will be observed.

Students are required to have a good acquaintance of the principles of Sociolinguistics and Historical Linguistics.

The course will offer a historical-cultural overview of Indian reality: the history of civilization, development of Tamil writing systems and literature, Tamil diglossia in historical perspective, contacts with other languages, ​​and civilizations.
In order to do that, Students will be also introduced to basic notions of Modern and Old grammar of Tamil. The teacher will provide transliterated texts and a glossary for personal practice and class readings. Students will be asked to analyse and discuss texts transmitted throughout a non-European writing system during classes and on their own as preparation to the exam.

Nella prima parte del corso, di carattere più generale, si esamineranno le ricadute che diversi filoni di ricerca nell’ambito delle scienze del linguaggio possono avere nella pratica dell’educazione linguistica. Nella seconda parte del corso, più specifica, si esamineranno le ricadute glottodidattiche dei principali costrutti e modelli elaborati dalla semantica lessicale per l’analisi dei fenomeni chiave del lessico (polisemia, ambiguità, metafore, espressioni idiomatiche).

La crisis de fin de siglo y la novela española de principios del siglo XX

Objetivo del curso es el estudio de la literatura española de las últimas décadas del siglo XIX y principio del siglo XX a través del comentario de algunas novelas representativas de la época.
En España, la crisis de valores propia del fin de siglo se acentúa a causa de los graves conflictos con los que el país tiene que enfrentarse. Tras la pérdida de las últimas colonias, (el desastre del 98), los intelectuales empiezan una campaña de crítica a la situación política, histórica y cultural, realizando importantes cambios en la cultura española de siglo XX. Este momento de renovación ideológica y artística ha permitido a la crítica calificar esta etapa como la Edad de Plata de las letras españolas.
El curso se articula en dos partes: en la primera parte se estudia el contexto histórico y cultural en la que se forma y vive la generación del 98. En la segunda se comentarán críticamente algunas de las obras más representativas de los autores de la generación, enfocando la peculiar contribución de algunos autores al género novelístico en las primeras décadas del siglo XX.

This course aimes at the knowledge of basic theories of lexical semantics for the analysis and study of meaning. It is also intended to provide a presentation of practical tools for semantic analysis (related to corpus linguistics) such as language corpora and concordance programs.
A part of the course will be dedicated to the practice of translation.

TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICAN DRAMA: PLAYS IN CONTEXT

This course aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of twentieth-century American drama, some of its most influential playwrights, its distinctive aesthetic and stylistic eclecticism, and its recurrent themes, metaphors, and motifs. Students will read six pivotal plays written by American and African American playwrights between 1941 and 1993, and they will explore the ways in which theatre, drama, and performance have contributed to the construction and deconstruction of an American identity. Although close reading and analysis of dramatic texts will be the main focus of the course, due attention will be paid to the theatrical, cultural, and historical contexts in which each play was conceived and produced, so that students will be able to understand American theatre history as a significant part of modern American cultural history. Besides encountering and learning to recognize a range of different dramatic styles, students will also examine the conflicting representations of American identity within each play, and will investigate the ways in which the six plays may connect with each other and with the broader American culture and experience.

In the summer of 1970, an international team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology began a study of the implications of continued worldwide growth. They examined the five basic factors that determine and, in their interactions, ultimately limit growth on this planet-population increase, agricultural production, nonrenewable resource depletion, industrial output, and pollution generation. The MIT team fed data on these five factors into a global computer model and then tested the behaviour of the model under several sets of assumptions to determine alternative patterns for mankind’s future. The Limits to Growth is the nontechnical report of their findings. The book contains a message of hope, as well: Man can create a society in which he can live indefinitely on earth if he imposes limits on himself and his production of material goods to achieve a state of global equilibrium with population and production in carefully selected balance.

Topic of the course is the concept of Exophonie, connected with those of Heimat/ heimlich as well as migration and exhile, with some history hints from 1918 onward. A discussion about social and aesthetic categories connected to the theme will be considered (stygma, otherness, melting and so on). In a second part of the course (30 hours) German contemporary writers (Essays and fiction) will be analyzed, with a special focus on the isotopy of the Artist’s novel and the Intellectual novel (Kuenstlerroman e Gelehrtenroman).

Students will all read Dr. Faustus by Thomas Mann and three novels from the reading list below (a) discussing the choices with the teacher (one of the Novels must be in German, chosen according to the language level of students). Students will also choose a text from reading list b), to be read in the language they prefer, the literature book (foreign language students can ask for an English or German equivalent).

Storia della critica letteraria italiana, a cura di Giorgio Baroni, Torino, Utet Libreria.

A partire dall'approfondimento della critica delle varianti elaborata da Gianfranco Contini e del relativo confronto con Benedetto Croce, si affronterà il caso esemplare dell'edizione critica dell'opera poetica di Eugenio Montale (a cura di R. Bettarini e G. Contini, Torino, Einaudi, 1980). Il dibattito animato dalla critica sulla stampa quotidiana e sulle riviste scientifiche a proposito di questa eccezionale edizione critica, che vede i filologi dialogare con l'autore vivente, sarà oggetto della parte conclusiva del corso.

This course aimes at the knowledge of basic theories of lexical semantics for the analysis and study of meaning. It is also intended to provide a presentation of practical tools for semantic analysis (related to corpus linguistics) such as language corpora and concordance programs.

The theme of history, and of the narration of history, is a leitmotif of postmodern thinkers and novelists. TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICAN DRAMA: PLAYS IN CONTEXT

This course aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of twentieth-century American drama, some of its most influential playwrights, its distinctive aesthetic and stylistic eclecticism, and its recurrent themes, metaphors, and motifs. Students will read six pivotal plays written by American and African American playwrights between 1941 and 1993, and they will explore the ways in which theatre, drama, and performance have contributed to the construction and deconstruction of an American identity. Although close reading and analysis of dramatic texts will be the main focus of the course, due attention will be paid to the theatrical, cultural, and historical contexts in which each play was conceived and produced, so that students will be able to understand American theatre history as a significant part of modern American cultural history. Besides encountering and learning to recognize a range of different dramatic styles, students will also examine the conflicting representations of American identity within each play, and will investigate the ways in which the six plays may connect with each other and with the broader American culture and experience.

The course aims to provide students with an introduction to historical sociolinguistics. The language studied will be the Tamil language, typologically distant from the European languages and spoken in the Southern area of ​​the Indian subcontinent.

Different typology of texts written in Tamil will be analysed and discussed taking into account their genre, function, writing support, and recipients of the text. The aim is to observe the linguistic variation and the linguistic change correlating it to extra-linguistic factors. The lexical and morphological levels will be observed.

Students are required to have a good acquaintance of the principles of Sociolinguistics and Historical Linguistics.

The course will offer a historical-cultural overview of Indian reality: the history of civilization, development of Tamil writing systems and literature, Tamil diglossia in historical perspective, contacts with other languages, ​​and civilizations.
In order to do that, Students will be also introduced to basic notions of Modern and Old grammar of Tamil. The teacher will provide transliterated texts and a glossary for personal practice and class readings. Students will be asked to analyse and discuss texts transmitted throughout a non-European writing system during classes and on their own as preparation to the exam.

La frequenza, anche saltuaria, alle lezioni, è comunque vivamente consigliata, data la difficolta di acquisire per conto proprio la padronanza degli strumenti critici necessari per l’analisi dei testi.

Questo programma è valido soltanto come esame curricolare, all’interno del piano di studi della classe LM37. Gli studenti di altro corso di laurea che volessero inserire questa disciplina nel loro piano di studio come esame a scelta o chi volesse sostenere l’esame come corso singolo per l’acquisizione di crediti per l’accesso al reclutamento degli insegnanti dovranno concordare con la docente un apposito programma, che comprenderà obbligatoriamente la lettura di testi in latino.

Nella prima parte del corso, di carattere più generale, si esamineranno le ricadute che diversi filoni di ricerca nell’ambito delle scienze del linguaggio possono avere nella pratica dell’educazione linguistica. Nella seconda parte del corso, più specifica, si esamineranno le ricadute glottodidattiche dei principali costrutti e modelli elaborati dalla semantica lessicale per l’analisi dei fenomeni chiave del lessico (polisemia, ambiguità, metafore, espressioni idiomatiche).
Le ultime 12 ore del corso (riservate agli studenti del curriculum "Letterature e civiltà" che devono ottenere 10 CFU in questo esame) saranno dedicate a esaminare più in dettaglio alcuni aspetti della didattica del lessico; la partecipazione a queste lezioni è comunque aperta a tutti gli studenti.

Relativamente alla parte linguistica, verranno approfonditi in particolare il lessico e i registri (stili funzionali) del russo, oltre a una riflessione sulla morfosintassi del russo che va ad integrarsi alle precedenti conoscenze linguistiche.
Relativamente alla parte storico-letteraria, verrà delineata una panoramica sull'attività pubblicistico-letteraria e teatrale di A.P. Čechov, e proposta un'approfondita analisi delle scelte linguistiche dell'autore e la traduzione di alcuni racconti selezionati, tra i più celebri.

The mendicant orders and the Gothic art.

The course intends to analyze the important role played by the mendicant orders - the Franciscan order and the Dominican order - in the diffusion of Gothic art. The main Franciscan and Dominican foundations in central Italy (in Assisi, Florence, Rome, Orvieto) will be examined.
The important role of the orders carried out in the eastern Mediterranean where the Franciscans are present in the Crusader territories in the Holy Land and in Constantinople will be examined.

The course will be divided into two parts: the first (38 hours) the teacher will draw the picture, the second (10 hours) will have a seminar character and the student will have to prepare a short report on texts assigned to a specific topic.

Course title: Emergencies of the present in contemporary art of Europe and the Mediterranean area
The course aims to outline the linguistic and thematic characteristics of contemporary art in Europe and the Mediterranean area over a period of time between 1989 and today. Starting from a controversial exhibition such as "Les Magiciens de la Terre" (1989) which started the debate on the questions of otherness and the use of artistic methods relegated to minority areas of art history as craft practices will cross junctions and debates to compose a picture of the ferment and the issues that animate the geographical context under consideration.

Title: Matter of Life in Contemporary Art Works

The course intends analyze a path of contemporary artistic production from the 70's to today through some peculiarities of temporary and precarious specifics and configurable as identities. These aspects are related to the materials used to make the work - rather organic materials and therefore easily perishable -; and also to languages (performance and installation). The examen will be started from a preliminary reference to the historical avant-gardes and the poetics of the Informal considered as anticipatory stages of the explored phenomena. We will consider some works of “Arte Povera” in which the use of organic materials puts them in a state of perpetual transformation and also some significant exhibitions, in particular the exhibition "When attitudes Become Form". We will consider also the relation into craftsmanship and community (from Alighiero Boetti to Claudia Losi).
Finally, in the light of the path followed and the issues investigated, will be considered the critical theoretical debate on the "life" of contemporary artwork .

This course aimes at the knowledge of basic theories of lexical semantics for the analysis and study of meaning. It is also intended to provide a presentation of practical tools for semantic analysis (related to corpus linguistics) such as language corpora and concordance programs.
A part of the course will be dedicated to the practice of translation.

- Theories of analysis of meaning: analyse sémique;
- Dictionary analisis: typology and description;
- Semantic relations of hyponymy/hyperonymy/cohyponymy; synonymy/anthonymy; meronymy.
- Corpus Linguistics: the criteria of linguistic analysis (collocation, colligation, semantic preference, semantic prosody)
- Corpus linguistics: corpus definition; corpus definition and compilation; corpus and translation.
