SCENES FROM A NATION: U.S. THEATRE AND DRAMA FROM THE CIVIL WAR TO THE POST-RACIAL ERA.
Il corso intende fornire una solida conoscenza di base della cultura teatrale statunitense del diciannovesimo e ventesimo secolo, di alcuni dei suoi principali artefici e dell’eclettismo estetico e stilistico che la caratterizza, nonché dei temi, dei motivi e delle metafore che attraversano con maggiore efficacia e frequenza diverse forme drammaturgiche. Leggeremo otto testi drammatici scritti da autrici e autori americani e afroamericani tra il 1861 e il 2015 e rifletteremo sui modi in cui il teatro, la drammaturgia e la performance hanno contribuito alla costruzione e alla decostruzione dell’identità americana. Sebbene il corso si concentri sulla lettura e l’analisi dei testi drammatici selezionati, particolare attenzione verrà prestata ai contesti teatrali, culturali e storici in cui ogni testo è stato ideato e prodotto, in modo che la storia del teatro americano venga riconosciuta come una parte significativa della storia culturale degli Stati Uniti d’America. Oltre a imparare a riconoscere diversi stili drammaturgici, gli e le studenti esamineranno rappresentazioni antitetiche dell’identità americana che convivono all’interno dello stesso testo e individueranno connessioni intertestuali significative, tanto sul piano stilistico quanto su quello tematico.
