The course provides students with a conceptual and practical understanding of the principles of remote sensing and statistically-designed inventories as tools for monitoring and inventorying forest resources.
The course aims to enable the student to develop the following skills:
Knowledge and understanding
- Acquisition of basic skills in the analysis of remote sensing images and management of spatial databases for mapping and monitoring of forest ecosystems.
- Acquisition of basic skills for the application of the main inventory methods for the estimation of the main dendrometric parameters characterising forest stands.
Applied knowledge and understanding
- Ability to represent the results of the analysis effectively through digital cartography in a GIS environment
- Ability to make use of sampling and statistical inference techniques used in the inventory field in an autonomous way
Autonomy of judgement
Ability to understand the results of inventory and cartographic knowledge tools used in forest resources monitoring
Communication skills
To be able to communicate with appropriate technical-scientific language the concepts related to the inventory and mapping of forest resources for monitoring purposes.

Learning skills
To develop the ability to set up autonomously remote sensing image analysis and spatial database management for mapping and monitoring of the forest ecosystems. To have the ability to draw on different cartographic and inventory databases and bibliographic sources in order to acquire new and updated skills.
