(syllabus)
Teaching is based on 48 hours of classroom lectures, divided according to the following syllabus: - Introduction to Materials Science and Technology. In this part, the various levels of organization of the structure of materials, compositional differences, and the criteria for classifying materials, based on the specificities of the individual families: metals, ceramics, plastics, and composites, are explained. This is followed by a discussion of the main properties (mechanical, chemical, physical) of materials. - Materials for design and production. The main families of materials are described and for each of them, the discussion covers the production cycle of materials and components, properties, durability, environmental sustainability as well as possible technological solutions aimed at obtaining materials characterized by the desired performance. Within each family, there is an in-depth description of the materials most frequently used by designers, also with examples of applications and transformation processes for the production of objects. Metallic materials, ceramics, and plastics (thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers) are discussed.
