The course introduces the main sociological problems, concepts and theories. The general objective of the course is to obtain a basic knowledge of the theoretical reflections and empirical results of the research carried out by sociology about various aspects of contemporary society. A further and more specific objective is to acquire an understanding of the main theoretical elaborations and of the main studies carried out in the field of urban safety sociology (with specific regard to cultural and organizational aspects, referred above all of this phenomenon in Italy) and military sociology (regarding professional and organizational aspects, with particular reference to the Italian case, also in a comparative key, especially with the US case).
Subject FIRST PART - BASIC SOCIOLOGICAL CONCEPTS AND HISTORICAL EVOLUTION OF THE WESTERN SOCIETIES - object of the discipline; - main sociological theories; - overview of methodology and techniques of sociological research; - pre-modern society, modern society and post-modern society PART TWO - SOCIAL RELATIONS, COMMUNICATION, ASSOCIATIONS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND INSTITUTIONS - social relationships, social roles, social groups; - culture, social values and social norms, identity and socialization, social categories and social stereotypes; - interpersonal, mass and computer-mediated communication - associations and civil society, organizations, social institutions and total institutions PART THREE: MILITARY SOCIOLOGY - evolution of the italian military organization from the 1990s to today - military as a profession - motivational and cultural profiles of italian military - armed forces and communication PART FOUR: SOCIOLOGY OF URBAN SECURITY - social deviance and criminality - safety and insecurity concepts, hazards, risks and threats - safety culture, safety cursor - counterculture and insurance organizations - organizational and systemic aspects of security policies - diffusion, participation and specialization in security policies - policies for urban security
