(syllabus)
The program consists of two modules. The first module aims at introducing the student to Arabic dialectology and its terminology and theoretical fundamentals, and, in particular, deals with the following topics: sociolinguistic situation of contemporary Arabic, with a focus on diglossia; emergence and spread of Arabic and New Arabic; classifications of Arabic dialects, and analysis of the main linguistic features. In the second module, a practical approach familiarizes the student with a variety of spoken Arabic, the basics of which will be acquired through the introduction to the transcription, the reading, translation and analysis of selected texts, and listening and speaking exercises as well.
