Monitoring and inventory of forest resources: an introduction 1.1 GIS: representation, management and analysis of geographic information 1.2 GIS data models: vector and raster 1.3 Main information sources in forest resource monitoring: remote sensing, digital cartography, GPS surveys 2. Fundamentals of remote sensing 2.1 Spectral signatures 2.2 Main characteristics of the sensors (spatial resolution, spectral resolution, radiometric resolution, temporal resolution) 2.3 Spectral indices and applications in vegetation monitoring: vegetation health, burned areas 3. Forest inventories 3.1 General concepts of the sampling survey of forest resources: population, variables, frequency, position indices and dispersion. 3.2 Sampling: objectives, subjective and probabilistic sampling. Accuracy and precision. Sample size and sampling designs. Generation of statistical sampling designs with GIS. 3.3 Integration of LIDAR and inventories for monitoring forest structural variables
