Module: Module 1
(objectives)
Modul 1 aims to provide to the students a basic knowledge on the history of industrial design, from the definition of the field of application of the term design with the industrialized artistic production present in the first Universal Expositions (London 1851), to the current attention on Ecodesign. The student will be able to analyze the different types of designs produced in the various times, identifying the style and the historical context of relevance. At the end of the course, students' expected learning will be as follows: 1) Knowledge and understanding: students will be able to know the main historical stages of industrial design, in particularly on the productions in the European countries (Viennese Secession; French art nouveau, German Bauhaus, Made in Italy 1950s); 2) Applied knowledge and understanding: through classroom debate and individual study, students will be able to develop the ability to independently read different design products, also applying it to the interpretation of new design. 3) Autonomy of judgment: students must be able to examine and describe original design products by resorting to the analysis of leading experts on the subject, arriving at the elaboration of autonomous judgments; 4) Communication skills: students must be able to explain with an appropriate language, also making use of slide presentations, the themes of the design products examined in relation to the artistic style of the historical context of reference, particularly identifying products in XXI century; 5) Ability to learn: students will have to acquire the ability to correlate the visual evidence of design products with the works of art directly examined during visits in Museums.

The historical path of industrial design will tackle starting from the main exhibitions of arts and crafts present in the Universal Expositions (London 1851), to move on to the design of furniture and architecture in the early decades of the twentieth century, simultaneously examining the main artistic movements of the historical avant-gardes between the two world wars. Examples of design in the USA and Japan will be examined, with particular attention to Made in Italy from 1950 to 1990, reaching up to the current issues of Ecodesign.

Module 2 aims to provide the student with basic knowledge on the history of contemporary art from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. The student will be able to analyze the most important protagonists and works in connection with the historical-cultural context and the general objectives of the course. At the end of the course, students' expected learning will be as follows: 1) Know and understand the main stages of the history of contemporary art in connection with Module 1 2) Independently assess the specific problems of the discipline 3) Organize and interpret the historical-artistic cognitive data of contemporary art phenomena in particular in relation to the history of design 4) Apply knowledge with a critical approach in order to develop original ideas in the field of design

The course aims to learn about the history of contemporary art from the mid-19th century to the present day in connection with its historical-cultural context and the history of design. There will be a series of preparatory lessons aimed at defining the guidelines of the history of contemporary art. Furthermore, through the analysis of some basic figures and junctions, the contexts, the founding texts, the works, the main reading keys are provided that allow the student an adequate approach to the problems of contemporary art, its fundamental concepts, protagonists, to new languages, to new technologies. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between art and design from the 1950s to the present day.
