This subject treats about the diagnostic analysis, especially the non-invasive ones, used in the study of cultural heritage objects in order to obtain information about the constituent materials and the state of preservation to be used for conservative purposes. The diagnostic methods are theoretically unlimited and can be derived also by other fields of science. Between the most used diagnostics techniques the following are treated: multispectral analysis with digital devices; elemental and molecular analysis by non-invasive portable instruments (X-ray fluorescence, Raman and infrared spectroscopy, reflectance spectrophotometry and other spectroscopic techniques). Laboratory experiences will be performed by using the instruments and the diagnostic techniques treated during the lessons.
