(syllabus)
The first part of the course will be dedicated to the presentation of the distinctive elements - theoretical and methodological - of cultural anthropology and some of the disciplinary areas in which it exercises its critical vocation. Among the topics covered: notes on the history of anthropology; objects and methods of the discipline; distinctive features of the anthropological perspective; notions of race, culture and ethnicity; relativism and ethnocentrism; ethnographic methods, participant observation and theoretical paradigms; folklore, popular culture, mass culture and ethnography of cultural consumption; time, memory and history; global and local cultures; anthropology of violence and genocide; kinship and relatedness. The second part of the course will focus on the contribution provided by anthropology to the analysis and implementation of cultural heritage making processes.
