(syllabus)
The course will follow the history of the Italian language in the eighteenth century, with particular attention to the role of Italian in Europe in science, theater and linguistic debate. These will be the main nuclei: historical and theoretical premises of the linguistic renewal of the Italian eighteenth century; the language of economics; the language of the theater (Goldoni and Italian for music); the linguistic debate; the influence of other European languages on Italian. Specific insights will be dedicated to the history of the relationship between English and Italian from the eighteenth century to today. Elements of Italian historical grammar and a general picture of Italian linguistic history from the beginning to the present day will be an integral part of the course.
