Linguistica generale
(objectives)
Knowledge and understanding: General Linguistics is not found at school. Therefore, the course aims to provide the students with all the methodological skills necessary for the analysis of speakers’ linguistic behavior. This is attested both in written and general linguistics teaches how to build what is traditionally called "GRAMMAR" of a language.
Applying knowledge and understanding: knowledge of phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax. The ability to transcribe phonetically and phonologically, morphologically and syntactically, to analyze a sentence in Italian and any other language chosen by the student.
Making judgments: students will be able to deal with linguistic data of European and non-Indo-European languages and to use the descriptive tools of linguistics to provide interpretations.
Communication skills: students will master the specialistic expressions and labels of the language sciences, they will be able to understand specialized texts in linguistics and to provide arguments on the studied topics.
Learning skills: The scientific grammar of a language can be represented as a set of predictions, that is, of rules which - if correctly formulated - make it possible to construct expressions (sentences, oral or written texts) deemed "acceptable" by the speakers of that language. These predictive rules generally refer to specific grammatical components such as phonetic-phonological, lexical, morphological, syntactic, and pragmatic each of one requires specific analytical techniques.
Hence, we will not teach normative grammar, we will not teach how to write / speak in Italian or any other language, we will not teach Italian or other languages spelling, but rather we will teach to observe the concrete speakers’ behavior (regardless of whether it is respectful or not of normative grammar). The aim is to build a linguistic database for composing a language grammar, in a scientific, non-normative sense. In addition to the Italian language, the linguistic data will also be extracted from other European and non-European languages. It will depend on the preparatory skills of the students. Therefore, data from fictitious languages may be also provided.
