(syllabus)
The course is divided into two parts: the first intends to provide the fundamental concepts of the security strategy, by analyzing the evolution of the use of the military instrument, according to a chronological order. The second addresses a case study: the story of the European Defense Community (EDC) in the post-war period, with negotiations between the allied to ensure strategic security in Western Europe at the beginning of the cold war.
Part one: −Use of force: from Napoleon to Clausewitz; world wars. −The Cold War: from the dispute over control of Germany in the post-war period to the search for a new route (Vietnam, Algeria, Middle East). −War war between people: contemporary operations; the purposes of the use of force; the use of force among people.
Part two: The negotiations for the birth of the EDC. −The West facing German rearmament. - The American proposal for German rearmament and the French reaction. - The negotiation for the European Army: from the Pleven plan to the Petersberg talks. −The Paris Conference and the EDC Treaty.
