(syllabus)
Introduction with focus on the systematic position of the class insects within the phylum Arthropoda, insect plant pests, agricultural practices, biological equilibrium. External features of insects: structure and function. External anatomy: exoskeleton, head, thorax, abdomen, endoskeleton. Anatomy of insects: digestive system, circulatory system, respiratory system, excretory system, reproductive system, nervous system. Postembryonic development of insects, metamorphosis, Hemimetabola, Holometabola. Biological cycles; transmission of pathogens. Integrated and biological pest control. Insect control: agricultural, mechanical, physical, chemical, biological-biotechnical methods. Short history of insecticides. Main chemical insecticides (active ingredients, commercial formulations, insecticide mixtures, fumigants). Phytotoxicity of insecticides; mode of penetration of insecticides; mechanisms of action of insecticides; selectivity; systemicity; persistence. Metabolism of insecticides; insect resistance to pesticides. Deleterious side effects of insecticides, effects regarding chemical pesticide sprays on arthropod populations, effects at short and long range, damages on the fauna, in particular pollinators and entomophagous species, environment and human health. Problems regarding insecticide applications: labels, waiting periods, protection of workers, handling and storage of pesticides. Examples of biology and management strategies for major insect pests belonging to the following orders: Orthoptera, Thysanoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera.
The laboratory exercises are based on the use of dichotomous keys in order to allow students to observe, recognize and evaluate the different morphological characters of insects in order to classify them at the level of order, suborder and sometimes even family. Dependent on the number of students, the exercises are carried out in several shifts.
