Course will start with an outline of Dante's works before Divine Comedy. The core of course will consist in he reading of several cantos, to stress the importance of Alighieri's masterpiece not only as poetry, but also as an hisotrical expression of Italian culture and a paredigm for international literature. Contos to be studied: Inferno 1,2,5,10,13,21,26,27,33 Purgatorio 1,3,5,24,26,30,31 Paradiso 33 Although not required to pass exam, it is also suggested to read selected parts of Vita nova, Rime, Convivio and De vulgari eloquentia, included into M.SANTAGATA and others, Il filo rosso. Antologia e storia della letteratura italiana, Rome and Bari: Laterza, I.1
Erasmus students and/or students not mother tongue, who consider their knowledge of Italian literature non to be sufficient to face the above indicated progam, are entitled to agree on an alternative program the the teacher. If they consider their knowledge of Italian language specifically non to be sufficient, they will undergo exam in English. They will be required to study 15 Cantos of Dante's Divine Comedy (at least 8 of them belonging to Hell) , to be found in English translation on www.dantonline.it (Società Dantesca Italiana), along with the entry Dante Alighieri in https://www.britannica.com/biography/Dante-Alighieri/The-Divine-Comedy.
