1. Materials of interest for cultural heritage: Stone materials. (3 hours) 2. Descriptive mineralogy and physical properties of minerals: morphology, habit, luster, hardness, cleavage. Systematic mineralogy: native elements, sulphides, oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, sulphates, borates, phosphates, silicates. The essential and accessory minerals of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Minerals used as gems and pigments. Industrial minerals; notes on the production of mortars, cements and ceramics. (21 hours) 3. Notes on the tectonics of terrestrial plates and petrogenetic processes: the rock cycle. (6 hours) 4. Chemical composition of rocks: major elements, classification and discrimination diagrams. (3 hours) 5. Geometric relationships of igneous rocks on the ground; volcanism and plutonism. The essential minerals of igneous rocks. (6 hours) 6. Metamorphic rocks: metamorphism and deformation; types of metamorphism and subdivisions of the metamorphic field, the metamorphic facies; classification criteria; the main minerals of metamorphic rocks. (6 hours) 7. Sedimentary rocks: Processes of formation of sedimentary rocks. Composition and texture of terrigenous rocks. Composition and texture of carbonate rocks. (6 hours) 8. Ornamental stones, commercial classifications and properties. The ancient marbles. (3 hours) 9. Quarries and Mines: methods of obtaining materials. (3 hours) 10. Laser Scanner, survey and data processing techniques.
Practical exercises will be carried out for the recognition and description of the main magmatic, sedimentary and metamorphic lithologies
