Starting from a brief history on the application of physics to Cultural Heritage, the course will provide information on the methodology of the main investigation techniques, their application and their cognitive outcomes. Topics: Introduction to physics applied to Cultural Heritage Elements of physics / optics: propagation of light, reflection and refraction; electromagnetic waves (generality, spectrum, visible light) Investigation techniques: - Photography, macrophotography and microphotography - Fluorescence induced by UV radiation - Infrared reflectography - X-ray radiography - X-ray fluorescence (XRF) - Microdestructive investigations
