INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY FOR ENTREPRENEURS Whether you are exploring a new product idea, developing a business plan, pitching investors, or preparing for a successful exit strategy, intellectual property protection is an increasingly key issue for every technology start-up. These lectures will provide students with a basic understanding of each of the primary forms of IP protection and help them appreciate how those protections can be put to work as valuable tools to add value to their new business.
ACADEMIC TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER STRATEGIES FOR RESEARCHERS: HOW TO START A COMPANY The purpose of these lectures is to help aspiring entrepreneurs to know more about how start-ups work, to be prepared for the process of working with business leaders and investors, and to explore biotech due diligence. SHAPING A CLEAR BUSINESS MODEL
• First students will be asked to finalize a clear business goal and start planning for a semester ahead. Students and their team will use the Business Canvas Model to help them along the thinking process of how to develop an idea into a potential business model. • The Business Canvas Model is a strategic management and entrepreneurial tool which allows you to describe, design, challenge and invent business models. • Develop a deeper knowledge about markets, customers, business models and basic financial implications. • Learn how to identify your first 10 steps in taking an idea and turning into a potential venture using a business framework.
COMMUNICATING THE VALUE AND APPLICATIONS OF YOUR RESEARCH
• These lectures will provide an introduction to the “soft skills” that are most important to entrepreneurship, including how to “pitch” your research in a way that investors, corporate partners, customers and your grandmother can understand!
PREPARING THE PITCH
Whether students are raising money from investors for a commercial project or persuading a grant making agency, to sponsor their idea – they will need to make an “elevator pitch”.
The purpose of this activity is to give students a chance to experience the basic skills for pitching and learn how to use them effectively.
