TRAINING OBJECTIVES
The course provides:
a) the basis for defining the concept of forest ecosystem, community and population; energy and matter flows; forest interactions with the biosphere and atmosphere; relationship between forest management and landscape;
b) knowledge of environmental parameters and their influence on the dynamics of the forest ecosystem; interpretation of the competitive processes that regulate the regeneration of forest stands;
c) the definition of the structure and types of forest in relation to phyto-climate;
d) silvicultural systems and sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation and landscape;
e) learning the scientific bases and techniques of sustainable forest managemment applied to natural or planted forests.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
1) have sufficient knowledge for the application of silvicultural systems while maintaining ecosystem services, and landscape/biodiversity conservation.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES
The course provides knowledge on:
a) basic information to recognize Italian forest tree species and the most common ornamental tree species used in parks, gardens and avenues;
b) morphological, dimensional and structural aspects of tree species in relation to their ecological needs; links with the technical characteristics of forest management and/or arboriculture .
The course allows to acquire awareness of historical, social and economic role of rural woodlands and urban forests for planning & management purposes and green infrastructure design.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
1) Students will be able to recognize the macroscopic morphological characteristics of Italian forest tree species and the main exotic ornamental tree species used in urban and periurban green areas, with reference to their ecological needs.
2) They also will be trained to recognize the geographycal distribution of tree species within the Italian territory.
3) Students will be encouraged to discuss tree species and their role in the rural-urban continuum by expressing their judgment independently in relation to previous knowledge and experience acquired on their own and during preparatory studies.
4) During the lessons, students will be stimulated to discuss about tree species using the specialized terminology to develop their communication skills. The use of proper terminology will be tested in the examination.
5) Students learning skills will be able to expose and develop opinions on topics related to the course. The active involvement of students will be developed also through practical activities.
