(syllabus)
The course aims to deepen the relationship between space, powers and media narratives in the international system, from the formation of national states to globalization.
The general part of the course is dedicated to the history of classical geopolitics, to the main theorists of Anglo-Saxon geopolitics, to the German and Italian schools of the twenties and thirties, until the decline of geopolitical studies in the aftermath of the Second World War. In the wake of the French school of Yves Lacoste and the magazine "Hérodote", the rebirth of geopolitics in the 1970s is followed, in connection with the Cold War, decolonization and the process of European integration, until the dissolution of the Soviet bloc. In the panorama of globalization and 11 September 2001, equal attention is paid to the "critical geopolitics" of Gerard Toal and to the challenges of geopolitics in the current international disorder.
Starting from the historical analysis of the geopolitical strategies of the United States, Russia, China, Japan and India, from the limits and potential of the European Union, the state of health of Africa and the situation in the Middle East, the monographic part deepens the relationships between the European Union and the Mediterranean, from the double point of view of international relations and political and regional crises, of political interdependence and media representations.
