(syllabus)
The course will follow the history of Italian linguistic purism from its origins to the present day, with particular attention to the fight against the influence of foreign languages. These will be the main nuclei: historical and theoretical premises; Cesari and the purism of the early nineteenth century; the repertoire of words to avoid between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; the linguistic policy of Fascism: the condemnation of foreigners; Paolo Monelli; the second half of the twentieth century: manuals of fine writing, linguistic policy; the discussion on anglicisms. Elements of Italian historical grammar and a general picture of Italian linguistic history from the beginning to the present day will be an integral part of the course.
