Basic knowledge for the comprehension of organic chemistry: electronic structure, orbitals, chemical bonds, orbital hybridization, single, double and triple bonds. Intermolecular forces in liquids and solids, the properties of solutions, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases and reactions acids-bases, solubility equilibrium, redox reactions, the chemistry of coordination compounds.
Introduction to organic compounds: nomenclature, physical properties and structural representation. Cis-trans isomers, chirality, enantiomers.
The main classes of organic compounds and their reactivity: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, epoxy compounds, amines and compounds containing sulphur, aromatic hydrocarbons, carbonyl compounds: aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives.
Natural and synthetic polymers. Carbohydrates, proteins, enzymes, lipids.
Commercial polymers: phenol-formaldehyde resins, saturated and unsaturated polyesters, polycarbonates, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, natural rubber and synthetic elastomers.
Commercial polymers used in conservation and restorations: silicones, epoxy resins, acrylic polymers, alkyd resins. Morphology of solid state polymers: amorphous and semi-crystalline polymers. Polymers fusion and glass transition.
Inorganic and metal-organic derivatives of silicon: silicates, fluorine-silicates, silanes and polysiloxanes, derivatives of aluminium, calcium and barium in consolidation techniques and in protection of surfaces.
Pigments and natural dyes.
Environment and impact on cultural heritage: air quality and water interaction. Pollutants: sources, characteristics and distribution in the atmosphere.
Degradation of original materials and of restoration products: control methods and diagnosis.
The most significant intervention procedures in the conservation process: methodological choices, selection of the most appropriate products and materials also according to the recent European standard EN16853:2017, Conservation of cultural heritage - Conservation process - Decision making, planning and implementation.
