(syllabus)
First module, 150 hours: The training of the first module will be carried out at the University Conservation Laboratory, on a bi-chrome, black and white, opus tessellatum with geometric and floral decoration. The mosaic come from the archaeological excavation of Well Q15, executed to instal Metro C in Rome . The mosaic, detached from its place of origin and reassembled on clay in the laboratory of the University during the last academic year, is now glued again on canvas, divided into 16 sections.
The module will address the following topics, referring to the mosaic at the Laboratory, with possible comparisons with other work cases: - Study of original materials and decorative motifs. - Study of conditions and causes of degradation. - Study of ancient and modern conservation / maintenance interventions and discussion on whether or not to remove them. - Methodologies of intervention, pros and cons of different methods identified. - Implementation of all conservation operations needed to prepare the artifact for assembly on a new support: temporary reassembly from mosaic front, further cutting of the sections to reduce the size of the fragments, 1:1 tracing of the new section division on transparent sheet, backing of the sections with mortar layers and storage. - Graphic and photographic documentation of the data acquired with observation during the study phase and documentation of carried out intervention operations. - Planning the restoration of a mosaic.
The module provides lectures on mosaic in general (materials, technique and typologies) and on mosaics detached from their original place (detachment methods, different supports, conservation problems and different intervention methods both on site and laboratory).
Second module 150 hours During the second module, conservation intervention on Well Q15 mosaic is continued, facing topics such as: - Different support methodologies for detached mosaics. - Lime mortars for tessellatum re-bedding. - Stone tesserae surface cleaning methods. - Lacunae reintegration. - Implementation of all conservation operations needed to prepare the artifact for public display: preparation of the support that will house the mosaic sections, gluing the sections on the new support, tessellatum surface cleaning, tessellatum lacunae re-integration or treatment and presentation of the mosaic. - Graphic and photographic documentation of carried out interventions.
Third module 150 hours Module 3 will be carried out at the archaeological site of Carsulae, addressing all operations needed for in situ mosaic stabilization, operating on one or more mosaics that will be assigned to the course: - Surface cleaning and vegetation removal. - Mobile tesserae re-bedding in their original position with lime mortar. - Grouting of detachments between tessellatum and preparatory mortar layers, with infiltration of hydraulic liquid mortars. - Mortar edging for tessellatum protection and containement - Lacunae and interstices between tesserae in-filling with lime-based mortars.
The module will also include lectures on mosaics deterioration in archaeological sites, deterioration stabilization methods and protection and prevention methods used on the site, such as water drainage and backfilling.
