Introduction to Production Systems. Classification of production systems. Production push, pull and mixed systems policies. Industrial processes and plant layout study. Technical-economic comparison between different processes / layouts. Sizing of Industrial Plants. Production capacity, crossing time and WIP. Compound performance of a production system and main causes of efficiency reduction (OEE). Sizing criteria of a production system. Material handling and storage systems. General information on material handling. Classification and overview of internal handling systems: rollers, belts, hoists, trolleys, AGV, AEM. Classification and overview of materials storage systems: stack warehouses, traditional shelving warehouses, automated warehouses. Selection criteria and design principles of material handling systems. Principles of sizing transport systems: rollers, belts and hoists, trolleys and AGVs. Principles of sizing of storage systems: warehouse served by lift trucks, automatic warehouse served as a stacker crane. Elements for the design of service facilities. General operating diagram of a service system. General sizing procedure. Recurring problems in design: production / procurement, service continuity, centralization / decentralization, generation / accumulation system, plant closure. Principles of operation and sizing of the main service plants: industrial water, compressed air, heating systems (HVAC systems and steam systems for technological users), electricity. Notes on the reduction of energy consumption of plant services. Notes on fire protection systems. General principles of production management. Analysis of the times of a line, balancing and study of plant efficiency (OEE). Cycle time and pairing. Availability to failure and setup: maintenance management and production planning policies. Setup improvement principles: SMED and lot sizing techniques. The problem of stocks: economic lot (EOQ and EBQ) and recovery or demand management (MPS / MRP). Notes on JIT (Lean Manufacturing) and POLCA (Quick Response Manufacturing) systems. Study of the flexibility of production systems (static, dynamic, mix) and comparison between the various policies.
