The course aims at providing a detailed historical overview of the social, political and economic changes occurred in the twentieth century, with a particular attention to the roots of the contemporary world and the challenges of the twenty-first century. The course will offer students historical knowledge necessary to understand and interpret the social, political, and institutional and economic reforms in the contemporary world.
The first part of the course will analyze the "peculiar features" of the contemporary age, the general phenomena and concepts which intertwined with the historical processes of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The second part of the course will examine the pivot of theabove-mentioned processes, namely those "breaches" which, on one hand, infringe the regular course of the events and on the other, pave the way to possible "new beginnings." In the latter case, the analysis will start from World War I, considered as one of the paramount watersheds of contemporaneity, to the present days.
